## Overview

**Event Type:** Competition

**Description:** Update 29 Jun 2023:

The schedule has been published. A few categories had to be merged - please check carefully and let us know if there are any concerns.

On the day, the division timings will be updated live. We may run ahead or behind the current published schedule so please arrive with plenty of time before your division is estimated to start.

Since we are not facing tight time constraints in the schedule, last minute registrations will be permitted until 11pm on Friday.

Update 26 Jun 2023:

A rules summary can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1JdgVn547uyXa9PW5We7mwtbBJmaAyKtXwU29Qd3KQtU

Update 23 Jun 2023:

Brackets will be generated on 29 June. The last day for signups is 28 June. Divisions containing only 1 competitor will be merged with the closest possible matching division.

We are excited to have Reform Sports Therapy on site offering sports massage and injury assessments for only £10 per 20-minute session, as well as taping/strapping for £2. Sessions can be prebooked via their Instagram page.

Update 4 May 2023:

Big news! BJJ living legend Roberto "Gordo" Correa (6th Dan) will give a seminar from 5pm-7pm in the competition hall immediately after the competition. There will be an open mat 7pm-8pm. Tickets for the seminar can be purchased on the day or in advance via Eventbrite.

We invite you to compete in the Northern Nogi + Gi Submission Open. This is a grappling tournament with a simple concept - either win by submission or our experienced black belt referees will choose a victor based on activity, submission attempts, and control.

The event will be held at the English Institute of Sport near Meadowhall shopping centre. This high-spec venue has free parking, a cafe, and capacity for 250 spectators in the gallery seats. High quality mats will be used for our extra large (8m x 8m) competition areas.

Our first event in March went well, but alongside feedback such as "Best competition I've ever been to!", we also received suggestions for how we can keep getting better, and you can expect the following improvements:

Early bird tickets (£30) are available until 01 May 2023.

Normal tickets (£35) are available until 10 Jun 2023.

Late entry tickets (£40) are available until 28 Jun 2023.

Want to do both GI and NOGI? Add the second category for only £20.

All tickets are refundable until 24 Jun 2023.

Entry for spectators costs £5 on the door (pay by cash or contactless). Spectators will be directed to the upstairs gallery seating, which offers a clear view of our 3 mat areas.

Competitors must weigh in at least 1 hour before their first match. It is not required to wear a gi for weigh in. Each team is permitted up to 2 coaches as cornermen.

For NOGI divisions, acceptable clothing must be worn. This means no zips or other metal parts, no loose tops such as tshirts or tank tops, and no pockets. Grappling shorts and a rashguard are recommended for nogi, and competing without a top is also permitted.

For GI divisions, gis must be in good condition, thick enough for grappling (ie no karate gis), and a reasonably good fit for the competitor. The correct colour belt must be worn. For GI, the experience categories roughly correspond to BJJ belts as follows:

Novice -- white belt.

Intermediate -- blue belt.

Expert -- purple belt and above.

Expert: No strikes, leg scissor takedowns (kani basami), small joint manipulations, slams out of submissions from above shoulder height, biting, gouging, or fishhooking of the mouth, nose, etc.

Intermediate: As above, plus no suplexes, spinal locks, or slams out of submissions from any height.

Novice: As above, plus no twisting leglocks (such as toe holds, heelhooks, etc), jumping guard, hip joint locks, wrist locks.

This is a single elimination event but if time allows (depending on registration numbers) we may run additional matches within each category for experience only.

Weight and/or age categories may be merged if too few competitors register for any given category. Merges will begin from mid June and we will consult with affected competitors in the lower weight/upper age division being merged where possible.

Brackets will be published 10 days before the event.
