If a bracket gets too large, we split it into groups and run a final to keep things clear and competitive.

In the Novice category for adults, we use groups of 4 athletes.

We use this format because the Novice category is designed as a first step into competition. Fewer matches keep the experience positive and safe, while still ensuring every athlete gets several opportunities to step on the mat. By awarding medals for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place within each group, we make sure there is always something to celebrate and encourage athletes to continue their journey in the sport.

For all other categories (Beginner and above), the standard format applies with larger groups and a knockout stage to determine the overall winner.

Men & Women

At VERSUS, we want to offer fair and safe matches for everyone. That’s why we make clear distinctions between Novice, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced levels—based on actual grappling experience, combat sports background, and prior results.

Please be honest when selecting your division. Sandbagging (competing below your real level) ruins the experience for others and will always lead to a DQ with no refund.

**Q: Can spectators join?**A: No. Only athletes and coaches are allowed—except parents of under-18 athletes.

**Q: Am I Novice or Beginner?**A: See Experience Guidelines.

**Q: When are brackets published?**A: Friday before the event.

**Q: Can I change my division?**A: Yes, until 17:00 on Saturday the before the event via Smoothcomp: My Account > Your Registrations > Edit

**Q: When is weigh-in?**A: From 12:00, closes 45 minutes before your first match.
