## Overview

**Name:** Ares BJJ Brasil

**Description:** The Ares Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association was created by a group of friends who value friendships and principles before business. Founded by four experienced black belts - Alan Moraes (4th degree), Milton Bastos (3rd degree), Samir Chantre (3rd degree), and Osvaldo "Queixinho" (3rd degree) - the association started with approximately 17 affiliations around the globe and continues to grow. Each founder brings over 20 years of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience to the organization.

Ares BJJ's mission is to be one family with worldwide ties that bring Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the next level and change lives. The association emphasizes that at the end of the journey, friends and family are what matter most, not business relationships that end when interest is gone. They pride themselves on creating a supportive community free from the politics that often plague martial arts organizations.

The headquarters is located at Ares BJJ Brasil in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, where Alan Moraes serves as the Head Coach. The association welcomes gyms focused on competition training as well as those emphasizing self-defense and fitness. With decades of combined experience, the founding instructors are committed to helping members reach their goals and achieve success in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, and Self-Defense through world-class instruction.

## Instructors

### Alan Moraes - Black

**Role:** Head Instructor

**Bio:** Alan Moraes was born on April 16, 1977, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Alan began his martial arts career through judo in school at the M. A B. E., he was 10 years old and the tuition was run by coach Josemar. Alan trained for six years in his school, being undefeated throughout that period while winning the inter-tournament 5 times, being also the country’s intercollegiate champion and two-time Colégio Veiga de Almeida tournament champion.

In 1992 Alan Moraes had his first contact with Jiu-Jitsu. He was a Judo athlete for the Flamengo club and started picking up BJJ to improve his ground skills. His first Jiu-Jitsu coach was the illustrious Marcelo Alonso, but not long after he started, Marcelo moved to the United States, and the coaching was picked up by instructor Marinho. Under Marinho’s guidance, Alan Moraes started competing and winning his first competitions in Jiu-Jitsu, he also starts assisting the other Carlson Gracie coaches with the kids’ classes.

Marinho awarded all Alan’s belts until his purple, his training was then handed to Ari Galo, who promoted him to brown belt and invited Alan to start assisting him with the adult classes, thus giving start to a new phase in Alan Moraes’ life.

In December 2002, after a series of podium runs in the brown belt division in the World Cup and Rio State Championships, Alan Moraes finally receives his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, awarded by Carlson Gracie Junior. He continued his work as a coach in the famed club.

### Milton Bastos - Black

**Role:** Instructor

**Bio:** Milton Bastos was born on May 19, 1982 in São Paulo, growing up in the Bairro da Liberdade borough.

After a short spell in kung fu during his early childhood, Milton was reintroduced to martial arts as a 13 year old. Bastos’ cousin was a big fan of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and often enticed Milton to join a jiu jitsu gym with him, where they could both learn how to fight. Convinced of the benefits grappling could bring him, Bastos ended up joining an academy (even though his cousin ended up never following suit).

Marcos Paulo, a former student of Grand Master Pedro Hemetério was Milton’s first instructor, and the man who took him from the junior belt system all the way to purple belt.

At the age of 18 Milton discovered wrestling. His newfound love for the stand-up component of grappling drove him away from BJJ for a few years, a time when Bastos competed in both freestyle and the greco-Roman facets of this sport.

In 2009 a good friend of Milton Bastos convinced him to compete in the IBJJF World No-Gi Championships in California. After the tournament, this same friend invited Bastos to take some time off and spend a month with him in the United States. This seasonal stay would end up being a permanent one.

Once settled in the US Milton Bastos joined the Paragon academy of Ricardo Miller . It would be Miller who promoted Milton to black belt during June 2010. His relationship with Paragon ended in 2013, eventually leading to him to form the Ares JJ association together with Samir Chantre , Alan Moraes and Osvaldo Moizinho .

### Osvaldo Queixinho - Black

**Role:** Instructor

**Bio:** Co-founder of Ares BJJ Association with over 20 years of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience.

### Samir Chantre - Black

**Role:** Instructor

**Bio:** Samir Chantre was born on the 15th of October, 1988 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He first saw Jiu Jitsu at the age of 9 on his brother’s graduation ceremony (yellow belt). He decided he wanted to follow his brother’s footsteps and joined the famous Fabricio Academy ( Fabricio Martins ) in Copacabana, where he lived. A year on his Jiu Jitsu training he switched to the academy where his brother trained, being tutored by a jiu jitsu legend, Carlson Gracie black belt Sergio “Bolao” .

An avid football (soccer) player, Samir Chantre left jiu jitsu to dedicate his full attention to his soccer career, though only a year after he quit, Samir understood that he could not go on without jiu jitsu and returned to the mats. Coincidently his good friend Alan Moraes had just received his black belt around that same time and was coaching at the Carlson Gracie team academy, he asked Samir to come down to his gym and thus Chantre returned to training now under Moraes’ guidance.

Samir came to the US as a brown belt, convinced by another good friend, Caio Terra . With Caio, Samir has earned some of his most notable tournament wins, such as the open weight gold at the Las Vegas Open and his world nogi gold medal. In 2010 he opened his gym in Modesto California, joining the Caio Terra Association (CTBJJA) as the BJJ program director. In the meantime, in 2009 he received his black belt from the hands of professor Moraes, though keeping his CTBJJA bonds.

In 2015 Samir left the Caio Terra Association to form his own team, Samir Chantre BJJ. By 2016 he paired up with his former team mates Osvaldo Moizinho and Milton Bastos and form the team Ares Jiu Jitsu.
