## Overview

**Name:** Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu

**Description:** Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu (B9) is a network of martial arts academies led by Master Marco Antônio Barbosa, known as "Barbosinha". Founded in 2011, the B9 team has grown to over 60 affiliated schools across Brazil and internationally, with more than 3,700 students and 69 certified instructors united by a shared philosophy and teaching methodology.

Master Barbosa's journey began in 1968 in Araçatuba, São Paulo. He started training Judo at age 13 and earned his black belt in 1986 under Sensei Uichiro Umakakeba in Bastos, known for rigorous traditional Japanese training. He competed internationally, representing Brazil at the 1991 Pan American Games in Cuba and the World Championships in Spain. In 1992, while working as a Judo instructor, Barbosa was introduced to Jiu-Jitsu and began training with Roberto Godoy and Macaco at Companhia Paulista. His exceptional ground fighting skills from Judo (Ne Waza) translated perfectly to Jiu-Jitsu, and he became renowned both in Brazil and internationally as a masterful guard passer.

The B9 academy system emphasizes not just sport and competition, but personal development and social transformation through martial arts. Their mission focuses on promoting quality of life and well-being through Jiu-Jitsu and other martial arts as tools for personal and social transformation. The headquarters is located in Vila Mariana, near Paulista Avenue and Paraíso metro station, featuring a reception area, locker rooms, functional training space, boxing ring, and spacious mats. The academy offers programs for all ages and skill levels, including Kids Jiu-Jitsu, adult Gi and No-Gi classes, competition training, boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling (Luta Olímpica), Judo, and functional training.

### Patrícia Lage

**Role:** Instructor

**Bio:** Patricia Lage was born on March 7, 1977, in São Paulo, Brazil, where she was born and raised. Patricia’s mother used to take her to Judo classes and watch her father (Roberto Lage) train. She was enthusiastic and wanted to mimic her father in the Japanese art, but she was told she could not because females were not allowed to train at the dojo. Patricia used to do swimming classes at the “Foquinha” academy in Sao Paulo, an academy that also had kids classes for Jiu-Jitsu, after seeing children practicing BJJ, Patricia asked her mother to sign her up which she did. The coach there was the legendary Otavio de Almeida, who also trained with Patricia’s father.

She continued training under master Otavio competing actively since the age of 4/5 years of age, having medalled in every age division there is in Jiu-Jitsu. Though she trained mainly under Almeida, it was her father that awarded her all her belts, including her black belt, a promotion that took place in between March 11 and 18, 1995, a few days after her 18th birthday.

Although often mentioned as the first female to earn a black belt in BJJ, at the time of her graduation, there were already at least two others training alongside Lage in her academy. She was, very possibly one of the very first to receive her CBJJ/IBJJF diploma, something she requested in order to compete at the Brazilian Nationals that same year.

Patricia Lage also graduated in Veterinary medicine, practicing her academic vocation in the army, where she became a lieutenant.
