Atlantic Jiu-Jitsu

Atlantic Jiu-Jitsu, established in 2009 and formerly known as Alliance Jiu-Jitsu Sligo, is Sligo's first full-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy. Founded to provide the people of Sligo with an opportunity to learn this dynamic sport, the gym joined the world-renowned Alliance Jiu-Jitsu Association in 2011, led by Romero "Jacaré" Cavalcanti, before rebranding as Atlantic Jiu-Jitsu. The academy is affiliated with the Irish Amateur Wrestling Association (IAWA) under the aegis of the Irish Sports Council, the National Governing Body for grappling-based combat sports in Ireland. Since opening Sligo's first dedicated BJJ facility in September 2015, Atlantic Jiu-Jitsu has become a cornerstone of the Irish grappling community, hosting seminars with world champions including Lucas Lepri and regularly competing at national and international competitions.

Atlantic Jiu-Jitsu's training philosophy is based on the highly effective Ecological Approach to learning, creating a unique methodology designed to deliver maximum results. The academy offers a structured curriculum from white belt fundamentals through advanced training, with separate programs for adults and youth (ages 7-15). Classes range from beginner-friendly Fundamentals BJJ to advanced Gi and No-Gi sessions, with students required to earn a minimum of 2 stripes on their white belt before progressing to intermediate classes. The gym emphasizes systematic skill development, technical precision, and preparing students not only for competition but also for self-defense and personal growth in fitness, confidence, and mental focus.

The coaching team is led by three Alliance black belts: Ryan Smyth (Head Coach), a professional BJJ coach and IBJJF European Championship winner with over 20 years of experience, who also holds certifications as an EQF Level 4 Personal Trainer, Wrestling Coach, and Weightlifting Coach; Morgan Smyth (Senior Coach), who brings technical expertise and academic precision to instruction; and Dominik Szerszen (Coach), the first black belt promoted by Ryan and Morgan at Atlantic Jiu-Jitsu and a highly decorated competitor. All coaches hold IAWA Coach Level 1 certificates and are certified BJJ instructors through the Alliance Jiu-Jitsu Association, ensuring professional, personalized instruction for students at all levels.
