Erik “Compella” Cruz was born in the Bronx, New York City where he was raised until his family relocated to Los Angeles at age 12. At age 15 he found a boxing/kickboxing academy run by the world famous Benny “The Jet” Urquidez and began learning striking techniques. At age 17, Erik began training in Quantum Jiu-Jitsu at UC Santa Cruz and started gravitating towards the grappling side of martial arts. Erik also studied Tai Chi and sparred regularly with a small group of Jeet Kune Do students. He later met Muay Thai champion Chris Reilly at the Muay Thai Academy in North Hollywood, CA who introduced him to the Bomb Squad gym in Hollywood, CA featuring 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu with Jean Jacques BJJ black belt Eddie “The Twister” Bravo. Up to this point, Erik had only trained in a Gi and was intrigued by this no-gi, MMA applicable style of grappling and thus began mastering the 10th planet system of no-gi jiu-jitsu. Over 13 years later, now a 1st degree 10th planet black belt under Eddie Bravo, Erik continues to compete at local and regional tournaments. Having earned a CAMO record of 3-1(all wins via first round submission), Erik is no stranger to utilizing jiu-jitsu in an MMA environment. His approach to jiu-jitsu emphasizes a well-balanced, yet guard-ready game to prepare for worse case scenario situations that occur during a MMA or self-defense encounter. By nullifying your opponents attacks and counter attacking with submissions you can control the pace and ultimately the ending of the fight with the proper sequence of techniques. Erik was the founder and head instructor of 10th Planet Sylmar from 2008-2010. He has taught at several notable martial arts academies including: 10th Planet HQ, 10th Planet Sylmar, 10th Planet Van Nuys, 10th Planet Burbank, The Academy (Rigan Machado), Mejiro’s LA, House of Champions, Grabaka Gym (Tokyo, Japan), Endure BJJ (Yakota Air Force Base, Japan) and 10PJJ Amsterdam. Eric Ramey Eric Ramey, a black belt under Eddie Bravo, began his training at the Renzo Gracie Academy in New York City. He then moved to Los Angeles in 2009, where he continued his development under Eddie Bravo at 10th Planet Headquarters. Eric has been teaching at 10th Planet H.Q. since 2010. Well known for his extensive knowledge of leg lock systems, he’s a sought after coach amongst many in the 10th planet competitive community. Extremely methodical and precise in his instruction, Eric is regarded as one of the leading innovators in the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu System. He has taught seminars all around the world; including the U.K., Europe and across the U.S. Lila Smadja-Cruz is one of the top female competitors and pioneers representing 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu. As one of 10th Planet HQ’s original and longest training students she is the 3rd woman to ever receive a brown belt from Eddie Bravo. Most recently she was a competitor in the first all-female EBI Tournament on UFC Fight Pass and can boast the second fastest submission ever at 23 seconds. She has dedicated her life to fitness and martial arts. Beginning in 2006, training first in Muay Thai and then jiu jitsu, she has since added spinning instructor, certified yoga teacher and certified personal trainer to her resume and coaches both kids and adults. John Botello is the Chief Instructor of 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu Phoenix. He was born and raised in Harlingen, Tx. John started training Jiu-Jitsu while in the U.S. Navy under Relson Gracie in 2001 while in Pearl Harbor, Hi. After training with Relson for a year, John then moved to San Diego, Ca. John then started transiting from San Diego to Los Angeles, Ca. to train with Rickson Gracie. John also trained with Rickson Gracie black belt Fabio Santos, from whom John received his blue belt. John was told about Eddie Bravo by a friend of his and decided to try out his class while in Los Angeles. After one class John was hooked, and decided to give up training in the the Gi all together. John then started training at 10th Planet Hollywood. After leaving the Navy in 2006 while driving home through Arizona and back to Texas, Johns’ sister convinced him to stay in Arizona. He started training at Sitan Gym in Chandler Arizona under black belt Edward Rene Sanchez, whom John received his purple belt from in 2007. John has been certified to teach the 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu system since Jan 26th 2007. His school is Eddies’ first 10th Planet affiliate school. Rick Marshall has always been a technical thinker and it shows in his Jiu Jitsu and martial arts instruction. From grade school, Rick excelled in math and sciences and was invited to join Gifted and Talented Education in the 3rd grade, after scoring extremely gifted on an IQ test. He went on to earn a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science from UC Riverside, a Masters Degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern California, and an MBA from Duke University. Having worked at defense companies such as Raytheon, Northrop and Lockheed, and technolgy companies such as Panasonic and Samsung, Rick has always had to wear his thinking cap. He found jiu jitsu as a way to combat his daily 9-5 routine. Rick began his jiu jitsu studies at Jokers Wild Fighting Academy, where a friend gifted a Rubberguard book to him and said, “This style fits you.” And the rest was history! Rick quickly engulfed himself in the Rubberguard system. Rick found jiu jitsu to be like his breakdancing days of old. Instead of battling on the dancefloor, one would grapple on the mats. Life brought him to 10th Planet where he would train under Sean Bollinger, Eddie Bravo’s 2nd Black Belt. Rick chose to start at White Belt again under Sean, being that 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu was such a new style for him. Later, Rick relocated to Headquarters in Downtown LA, and began training under Master Eddie Bravo. Rick was asked to be part of the training camp for the long awaited, much anticipated, Eddie Bravo Vs. Royler Gracie- Part 2, where Eddie and Royler would headline at Metamoris. Rick was granted the rank of Black Belt by Eddie Bravo in December 2014, after 3 and a half years at the rank of Brown Belt.

10th Planet Richmond is headed up by head instructor Scott Elliott. Scott has spent nearly his entire life in martial arts starting with wrestling as a kid and eventually adding the study of various martial arts. He joined the army in 1987 as a Cav Scout/Recon and eventually became a Drill Sgt. and trained troops for Desert Storm. After getting out of the military he opened his MMA gym in 1994 after seeing the first UFC and continued studying martial arts with legendary masters like Dan Inosanto, Ajarn Chai Sirisute, Jean Jaques Machado, Erik Paulson and Salem Assli. Over the following years, he earned instructor certifications in Muay Thai, Jun Fan/JKD, Kali, Silat, Savate and Combat Submission Wrestling and still trains with many of his instructors to this day always seeking to increase his knowledge and stay on the cutting edge. After Scott heard of Royler Gracie being tapped out by Eddie in 2003, Scott became intrigued by Eddie’s techniques and philosophies of Jiu Jitsu. He scrambled for anything he could find to learn more about his technique and started collecting any articles, clips and eventually books and videos to start incorporating his special brand of Jiu Jitsu into his teaching curriculum. After adding more and more of the 10th Planet system to his teaching, he finally decided to go all the way and become an official affiliate and help the system grow. Now, Scott runs his gym as well as teaching college accredited courses in Muay Thai, MMA and BJJ at Eastern Kentucky University. Now retired from competition, Chris was a nationally ranked competitor who also fought internationally and medaled in Submission Grappling, Judo, Sambo and Combat Sambo. 10th Planet Round Rock Head Coach Manny Chavez is a 10th Planet Brown Belt under Curtis Hembroff. Manny was born in California, and raised between Los Angeles, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. Manny started his jiu jitsu journey training under Orlando Sanchez at Gracie Barra in Pasadena, California before transferring to 10th Planet Headquarters in Los Angeles and becoming a Purple Belt under Master Eddie Bravo. He then moved to Texas with his wife and two sons in 2018, where he joined and helped coach the 10th Planet Austin team. After receiving his Brown Belt, Manny, under the guidance and support of Gabe Tuttle and Kyle Boehm, became the new Head Coach and General Manager of the newly opened location in North Austin, 10th Planet Round Rock. Gabe is a black belt under Richie “Boogeyman” Martinez and is the new head coach of 10th Planet Austin. Born and raised in San Diego, Gabe did not take part in any competitive athletics until he found jiu jitsu through being a fan of mixed martial arts. He started training regularly in 2014 at a local school in San Diego before finding the Boogeyman when 10th Planet San Diego opened in 2015. Gabe was promoted to blue belt shortly after beginning his training with the 10th Planet San Diego team and had a fast track to purple belt promotion later that year. He began teaching beginner classes as the school’s growth exploded and eventually moved into a bigger teaching role by 2016. Gabe was promoted to brown belt at the end of 2017 and to black belt at the end of 2019, becoming Richie’s first and only home-grown black belt. Gabe moved from San Diego to join the 10th Planet Austin team at the beginning of 2020 and is now the Head Coach and General Manager of 10th Planet Austin. Peter Di Peter started his training in the martial arts in 2005. Albert Tapia, a Sacramento native, began his combat sports journey wrestling at Christian Brothers High School, and then went on to wrestle at Sacramento City College before transferring to the first NAIA collegiate wrestling program in the state of Texas. He began coaching wrestling in college at WBU for 5 years before moving to Southern California where he fought professional MMA under Coach Colin Oyama at Team Oyama. Albert received his brown belt under Coach Ron Turner and Coach Casey Halstead of 10th Planet Orange County in 2019.  Coach Albert moved back to Sacramento in 2021 to open 10th Planet Sacramento. He has one of the most distinguished front head lock games and is most well-known for his signature North South choke. Jon is a lifelong grappler who began his career at the age of 10 in freestyle and folk style wrestling. In college Jon began boxing training and started Hapkido (now a 3rd degree BB) and earned a degree in dietetics. After college Jon continued to train and compete in various martial arts. In the fall of 2011, he founded Michigan Martial Arts Training Center where he taught Catch Wrestling, Hapkido and coached MMA. A professor of seismology (the study of earthquakes) at the University of Utah, Amir brings a cerebral academic approach to the grappling arts, emphasizing details and precision in his instruction. An active competitor since he began wrestling in junior high, he’s won numerous Grappler’s Quest, NAGA, and Gracie National/World tournaments, is a veteran of EBI and ADCC, and was a member of the championship-winning Team 10th Planet at Quintet 2. Amir’s skillset focuses on the coolest-looking rolling, flying, and rubber-limbed techniques… because what is the point of doing anything if you don’t look cool?
