# Paul Schreiner

>

## Overview

**Name:** Paul Schreiner

**Date of Birth:** December 15, 1977 (age 48)

## Bio

A pivotal figure in the lineage connecting West Coast jiu-jitsu to the Marcelo Garcia Academy, Paul Schreiner earned his black belt in December 2007 under Claudio França and Garth Taylor after a competitive career derailed by severe knee injuries and a life-threatening staph infection. A key architect of the Kaijin Academy in Santa Cruz, Schreiner’s game is defined by a methodical, pressure-based approach that made him an ideal assistant instructor when Marcelo Garcia invited him to New York in 2010. His competitive marker remains his deep technical influence rather than a major title, having trained under Roberto “Gordo”, Rilion Gracie, João Rangel, and Dave Camarillo along the way.
