The eldest son Helio Gracie handpicked to carry the family banner, Rickson Gracie embodied the uncompromising ideal of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu — no cross-training, no sport rules, only the art as his father taught it. He made his name in no-holds-barred contests, most famously twice defeating the massive Rei Zulu, the first time at age eighteen and outweighed by twenty kilos, finishing both fights by rear-naked choke. His 1994 Vale Tudo Japan tournament run, submitting all three opponents in one night, cemented his mystique, and the never-released closed-door beating of Yoji Anjo became Gracie folklore. The planned showdown with Kazushi Sakuraba never materialized after the death of his son Rockson, and he never competed again. He received his red belt in 2017.
