Founded on May 1, 2006, Cohen Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Team is affiliated with the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Confederation (CBJJ/IBJJF), CBJJI, CBJJE, and the Amazonas Jiu-Jitsu Federations including FAJJPRO, FAJJE, FJJAM, and FASUB. The team has its main headquarters in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, with an additional location in Orlando, Florida, USA. Under the motto "Fazendo campeões e cidadãos" (Making champions and citizens), Cohen BJJ has grown to serve over 400 students through its social project initiatives, combining competitive excellence with community development. The academy offers training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Gi and No-Gi), Judo, and Muay Thai for both children and adults. Cohen BJJ has achieved significant competitive success, including Brazilian Children's Champion in 2010, Vice Brazilian Pre-Mirim Champion in 2011, Bi-Amazonense Team Champion in 2012, Team Champion of Copa do Brasil No-Gi in 2017, and 5th place overall at Copa America de BJJ in Boa Vista, RR in 2018. The team operates multiple branches throughout Manaus including Cohen Viver Melhor, the main headquarters, Cohen São Jorge, and Cohen BJJ USA in Orlando. Head instructor Alessandro Cohen is a 5th Degree black belt who began his journey in 1992 at Clube Paulo Coelho, training until brown belt in 2001 before joining Grand Master Osvaldo Alves' team. Cohen received his black belt in April 2005 from Grand Master Osvaldo Alves, a direct student of Grand Master Reyson Gracie, the precursor of Jiu-Jitsu in Amazonas. Cohen is also a brown belt in Judo and was a three-time Amazonense champion in the 1990s. His instructors include Professor Aureliano dos Santo Batista Neto (2nd Degree Black Belt), Professor Heron Carlos (2nd Degree Black Belt), Professor Alcimar (2nd Degree Black Belt), and Professor Luiz Neto (3rd Degree Black Belt - USA). Beyond competitive training, Mestre Cohen is dedicated to social causes and has held various prominent positions in government while maintaining his commitment to using Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a vehicle for improving the lives of children and youth in the community.
