Skipping warm ups? Got some skills and causing some trouble? Being the middle child of the BJJ family you are taking shots from above and below. JT & Joey both recognise the risk and potential of a good purple belt and if you don't pay attention they can catch you slipping. Your experience at purple belt is good enough to threaten the higher belts but the lower belts have a target on your back. Depending on your journey a lot of your BJJ game is built at this stage in the game and you are starting to wake up to your potential and starting to come into your own. Competing, full time training, traveling internationally but how long can it be sustained? Is purple the most important belt? Whether you agree or not it is a great time in your jiu-jitsu life so live it up.

To celebrate the launch of the new BJJ for Old F***s instructional (available at grapplearts.com/oldguard) here are some of the most important takeaways for the older grappler. In this episode Rob Biernacki (age 46) and I (age 52) discuss... - The two things that change most about your training as you get older - How to improve as fast as possible by *limiting*your training - Why base, posture and structure are even more important for older grapplers - How to select for techniques that are high percentage at the high level but still work on young whippersnappers - How to stay safe on the mat and not get injured - Reducing unnecessary movement so you don't get tired - How gripfighting and range management will dramatically improve your abilities on the mat - And much more. Honestly, if you're beginning to creep up on the wrong side of 40 then this is a must-listen. Episode 206 - Qualities Of A Smart BJJ Practitioner (Part 2)

On this episode we discuss qualities 9-20 of a smart Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. This episode comes from an e-mail that Chewy had on his e-mail list. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list and are the next 10 qualities that Chewy came up with. Here is #11-20: 11. Can roll at various speeds depending on the situation. 12. Is able to undulate between their "A game" and new techniques that will push them to improve. 13. Isn't side tracked by a loss of short-term motivation but instead focuses on the long-term goals. 14. Does their best to be a good follower and in turn will make a good leader someday. 15. Is willing to invest in their skills through coaches, seminars, courses and other resources. 16. Understands that it's not just what you do, but how you do it that really matters. 17. Realizes that their biggest, most challenging opponent, is themself. 18. Understands that they will fail or be incompetent with most things in the beginning, thus they aren't discouraged when things don't go well early on because they already accept it would happen. 19. Never goes on a trip without some gear to train in. . . Just in case. 20. Has both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for training. Thanks to the podcast sponsors: Charlotte's Web CBD.
