ThruDark is one of the leading premium / technical / outdoor apparel clothing brands in Europe, founded by two special forces operatives, Anthony ‘Staz’ Stazicker and Louis Tinsley. Scramble is the leading Brazilian jiujitsu, grappling and MMA brand in Europe, and have leant their expertise in creating BJJ kimonos and nogi training wear to this collaboration. Scramble was founded by second degree Brazilian jiujitsu black belt Matt Benyon in 2009. The collection features military-inspired details combined with hand-drawn elements. The Scramble x ThruDark skull lockup draws from the ever-popular skull motif, a constant reminder of our own ultimately limited time on this earth – and an image often co-opted by military and special forces. Underneath the skull there are two knives – one is a Japanese short sword, and one is the iconic Fairbairn-Sykes (F-S) Fighting Knife, used by British military and special forces. This symbolises the coming together of the two brands. Underneath the skull, there is the Japanese phrase Jakuniku kyōshoku (弱肉強食) which is an idiom meaning “the weak are meat, the strong eat,” – essentially the “law of the jungle” or “survival of the fittest.” This is a phrase applicable to both military and martial arts scenarios and reflects the harsh reality of both of those. As well as the hand-drawn elements, this collection features repeated use of a fully custom designed Tiger Camo pattern. Tiger Camouflage was used extensively during the Vietnam war, and is used here in a mostly aesthetic sense as it is a personal favourite of Scramble Matt, from the many varieties of camo developed by armed forces around the world over the decades.
