I walked around our gym and talked to some of our highest-level black belts, coaches with decades of experience, and asked them one simple question: "What advice do you wish you had when you started jiu jitsu?" Their answers are pure gold, and I promise this wisdom can save you years of frustration and potentially prevent serious injuries.

Coach Luke shares three game-changing pieces of advice: tap early and tap often (your ego in practice doesn't matter - longevity does), don't compare yourself to others (compare yourself to who you were six months ago), and find a gym that matches your goals (a 45-year-old looking for self-defense shouldn't train at an MMA gym full of teenage wrestlers). Coach Matt, who's been training for 26 years, emphasizes leaving your ego at the door, staying consistent with your training, and making sure it's fun, this is family and community, not just about being tough. Coach Deon adds that you should come to learn rather than win, take risks and chances to get better, keep having fun so you stay consistent, and always remain a student no matter what belt you achieve.
