How much BJJ should you train every week? Your coach says Everyday. The Pro guys train twice a day! But how much is right for you? JT likes to take things to the extreme and Joey has a more moderate approach and through their experience helping thousands of BJJ folks get stronger, more flexible and get healthy- they have discovered the sweet spot. Now winning in terms of how much you train looks different depending on your Jiu-Jitsu goals: If you are a top competitor, an experienced hobbyist or a frothy white belt. The boys discuss what each goal might require and some approaches you can take to ensure you don't crash and burn. More does not always equal better. There can be some diminishing returns that come from chasing the BJJ dragon, taking something beautiful and turning it into a grind which can start to eat away at other parts of your life. Trial and Error is huge part of learning and failing in BJJ so working out what your body and soul can tolerate is an important part of knowing yourself. But when you push the limits - You often find them! Sometimes those results can be painful and occasionally embarrassing. How much do you train BJJ every week, let us know in the comments? Butterfly Sweep from Body Lock Entry @bjjboston.teamforsa

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), the butterfly sweep from a body lock entry is an effective technique to transition from defense to offense. When an opponent attempts a body lock, they are seeking to control your torso and limit your mobility. However, this position offers an opportunity to execute a well-timed butterfly sweep, using their momentum against them. Start by establishing a strong base and maintaining balance to prevent your opponent from completing the body lock. Use your legs to create hooks on your opponent's inner thighs, positioning your feet like butterfly wings. Simultaneously, gain control of one of their arms to limit their ability to post and defend against the sweep. As you shift your weight, elevate your hips and use a scissor-like motion with your legs to off-balance your opponent. This movement disrupts their stability, making it easier to topple them over. Once your opponent begins to lose their balance, continue the motion to complete the sweep. As they fall, follow through by transitioning into the mount position. Secure your position by controlling their hips and chest, ensuring you maintain top pressure. From the mount, you have various options to advance your attack, including submissions or further positional advancements. Mastering this sweep not only enhances your defensive capabilities but also provides a seamless transition to a dominant position, showcasing the fluidity and effectiveness of BJJ techniques.

Are You Getting Good BJJ Advice?

Bulletproof For BJJ

Do you ask for advice from higher belts at your Academy? Maybe your friends give you advice that seems a little questionable. Either way BJJ advice is not hard to come by but how do you know what's good info and what is fake news? JT & Joey have given and received a truck load of advice over the years and not all of it was helpful. To save you time there are some ways that you can cut through the BS and save yourself years of wasted time. When you are not sure if the advice you are getting is solid there are some easy things you can do to work it out. You need to get 2nd and 3rd opinions on the same question to see if there is a pattern between them. Also asking "Why do you say this...?" Getting an understanding of why your Advisor is telling you this will give context that can help inform whether or not the advice is relevant. Another key take-away from this discussion is understanding the person you are getting the advice from- What is their Hammer? What is their strength and are they only speaking from their place of capability which is not necessarily going to work for you with your specific skill set or body type. Lots of gems in this one- let us know the best BJJ advice you have received in the comments. Episode 317 - How To Build Better Side Control Escapes In BJJ: Part 2 (Live Q&A)

On this episode of the podcast, Chewy and Eugene do a live recording of the podcast and discuss the importance of building a solid system of escapes from side control. We also discuss if escaping from side control is the most difficult position to escape from, the approach you should take when escaping side control and what people lack the most, if escaping is a skill learned in the instructional setting or from experience, the biggest misconception when escaping side control, one quality or attribute to give you the ability to become amazing at escapes, and the "Iron Squirrel." Q&A: Is it better to look for escapes such as shrimping, ghost escape, inverting, or waiting on your opponent to move? If Chewy has learned something new when teaching a technique? What side control escapes chain together well based on common reactions? What's the best way to escape once you get flattened out? What is the best way to shoot a single leg takedown? How to improve cardio for BJJ? What to do when you're the smallest person in the gym? How to implement information from an instructional into training? Episode 347: Have you ever bulged a disc in your neck?! A friend of the podcast asks about rolling with a cervical disk replacement- is it possible? Is it advisable. JT references a very famous grappler who had to have one of their discs replaced and still compete only weeks after the surgery, who was it? Have you tried training 2 sessions per day? If you have limited days to train is it more beneficial than spacing out your training over the week or should you cram 2 x per day for 3 days? There are some pros and cons for both but which should you choose? Is jumping into comp after a long hiatus a good idea? 8 weeks of intense training with the end goal of getting after it and making the podium. Also it helps you get in shape for your wedding- right? Is this a good idea? Go hard on a competition training camp just before your wedding day, could be a recipe for disaster... On this episode, Chewy and Eugene discuss the importance of building a strong defensive side control to create a better offensive Jiu-Jitsu game. We discuss how initially we focus on bottom side control defense as newer grapplers, but eventually stop focusing on this part of our game. We also discuss why having poor defense can make your offense less effective, how a solid defense will improve your submission rate in competition, why confidence in your escapes works like a safety net, why grapplers panic in bottom side control, the first step in getting better at side control escapes, why Chewy decided to start focusing on his bottom side control escapes as a BJJ brown belt, the biggest and most common mistakes in relation to escapes and defense, and the importance of mastering a handful of techniques.
