Tsunami Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the official team page for students of John Veloso Ouano, a 5th degree black belt under Rodrigo Medeiros. The team was officially founded on December 2, 2013, and offers the highest level of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training in Harbor City and Culver City, California, in a safe, positive, and enjoyable atmosphere. As an IBJJF and USBJJF recognized academy, Tsunami BJJ is part of the BJJ Revolution Team (Carlson Gracie Team), co-founded by John Ouano, Rodrigo Medeiros (Pacific Beach, CA), and Julio Fernandez (Burlington, VT), with affiliate schools across the United States and overseas. The training philosophy at Tsunami BJJ emphasizes that instructors are "servant leaders" whose role is to guide and encourage students to effectively pursue their individual goals in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The academy welcomes students from diverse backgrounds, recognizing that each member contributes a vital part to the collective experience of the team. All courses are taught by experienced black belt instructors in a relatively informal atmosphere, with a focus on technique, drilling, and live rolling practice. Head instructor John Veloso Ouano is a 5th degree black belt under Rodrigo Medeiros, recognized by the IBJJF and USBJJF. In December 2002, John opened New Breed Academy with Johnny Ramirez, a longtime student and friend. John's lineage traces through the Carlson Gracie Team via Rodrigo Medeiros, and he is listed among the official Rodrigo Medeiros black belts. Classes are also taught by Perry Hauck, another highly experienced black belt. The academy offers classes for both adults and youth (ages 14-65), with no prior martial arts experience necessary.
