Dr Nicholas Tyau is an internal medicine specialist who was working at a hospital in the Bronx, the epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic in North America, during the spring of 2020. He's also a BJJ black belt, so he's no stranger to training and adversity! In this podcast we talk about the chaos that the pandemic created in the NY hospitals, the controversy over death certificates, hydroxychloroquine, vaccines, dealing with the second wave, and what it was like when Nicholas himself got infected by a patient. We get pretty granular in this one, but I hope it's still accessible for most people. Let me know what you think, Stephan Kesting P.S. #64 Why I Almost QUIT BJJ | How I overcame it

I nearly quit jiu-jitsu as a purple belt. This isn't something that I talk about very much, or even at all really. I used to try to get fulfillment in winning grappling tournaments. It worked for a long time, all the way up until I stopped winning. I know the thought of quitting jiu-jitsu is something that nearly everyone goes through in their journey. I wanted to take today and be honest about my struggle and some of the incredibly fortunate events and people that helped me get through this mindset. If you have a story of overcoming quitting jiu-jitsu, I would love to hear from you and share it on the podcast. This week, Steve is once again joined by Rob Biernacki from Island Top Team. If you follow Rob, you know how passionate he is about respecting expertise and calling out impostors. We live in a world where identifying expertise is harder - and more important - than ever. In this episode, we give you the tools to do so. When assessing an expert, beware these red flags: - Does the expert speak with 100% certainty at all times?- Does the expert avoid disclosing the limits of their knowledge?- Does the expert try to win arguments with quantity instead of quality? (the Gish gallop)- Does your expert cherry-pick facts to support their position, while disregarding evidence to the contrary?- Is the expert unwilling to entertain criticism?- Does the expert speak in overly simple, black-or-white terms?- Does the expert rely solely on their title or rank to justify their opinion?- Does the expert speak on matters outside of their area of expertise?- Are there no "quality gatekeepers," such as publishers or fact-checkers, to ensure the expert is correct?- Do the majority of other experts speak poorly of this expert?- Has this expert conflated experience with expertise? **IMPORTANT: BJJ Mental Models needs your help.** In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, the future for Steve and Matt is uncertain. Deliberate practice: if you try to get good at every aspect of your sport all at once then you'll get good at nothing. Instead break it down into specific skills, then break those skills down into components, and then refine those components before putting it all back together again. Note: this was recorded outside in the wind, so the message is good but the audio is a bit fuzzy. Sorry about that - I'll pick a spot with less background noise in the future
