062 - It's NOT About the Bloody Belt!

The Strenuous Life Podcast

I'm on fire for this one because it really gets under my skin when people focus on the wrong thing in their martial arts training. Boys and girls, it's about skill acquisition and NOT about the color of your belt. Get this wrong and it will destroy your relationship to the martial arts!

In this episode I give some of my best advice about exactly how your return to the mats should be structured. This is advice I've learned the hard way so take my advice - for the longest time I didn't use it myself and I wish I had!

Episode 18 - Chloe Moore

Episode 18 - Chloe Moore

The Raspberry Ape Podcast

Chloe Moore is a transgender BJJ competitor. This episode was brought about after a heated debated on the UK BJJ underground group about whether it was fair for a transgender woman to compete in jiu jitsu. The thread referred specifically to Chloe so I wanted to have her on to give her side and share her views and opinions on a matter incredibly close to her. In this episode Chloe is extremely open and transparent about the issues raised not only for trans people in general but also for herself personally. She is joined by RGA bucks teammate and good friend Hayley Carter.

052 - Rant: Why the 'Too Deadly to Spar' Myth is Total B.S.

It's a HUGE mistake to focus on techniques like biting, finger breaks and eye-gouging and avoiding techniques you can try out under pressure and against resistance in sparring. Here's why that's the case, and why most martial sports participants are actually far deadlier than most martial artists.

Andersons Martial Arts Academy Belt Testing 2017 - All Arts

Your lineage is your art, and your art is your lineage. An Academy with real lineage has a greater responsibility to teach and develop your skill and knowledge, as well as uphold the arts in all respects and quality. As a student at AMAA you should know your lineage. In each and every single one of our arts you will not get watered down technique, or be taught how to win a tournament without knowing how to defend yourself on the street. Furthermore, you will understand the arts specific contribution to the range in which it lives: ground, striking, weapons and so on. You will learn the ethics, philosophy, terminology, and exact syllabus of each art. You will get the direct lineage and teaching of the art – and each belt and rank will be in accordance with your lineage. As you go on to read about AMAA’s (and your) direct lineage please note that in the Phase (1, 2/3) JKD, Kali class students are taught all of the following ranges of combat and how to easily flow from each range: kicking range into hand range, hand range into close quarter trapping and grappling range, close quarter trapping range into grappling or ground fighting range. The use of weapons, both defensively and offensively, are taught in an easy-to-remember and efficient method of application. All classes are kept small or provide numerous instructors to give students the individual attention needed to progress Specific arts can be taken by students with a specific goal or interest All ranks and belts at AMAA are given (earned) under the exact lineage provided below in that exact art

In this episode I go into depth about why you (and everyone else) should train in martial arts. Hint: it's not about self defense, fitness or socialising; those things are definitely benefits, but they're not the core reason that martial arts training is so transformative. For more on this topic you can also check out a blog post I wrote on Grapplearts called Blood, Sweat and... Sparta!
