The Strenuous Life Podcast
This podcast episode covers all the details and preparations for a long solo trip in the Arctic that I'm starting today! After 30 hours of driving and a 2 hour bush plane flight to Nueltin Lake I'll be heading north of the treeline direct into the Barren Lands of the Arctic. Once there, I'll be completely alone and out of touch for 30 days. The only written description of the river is a few pages in a book written by a missionary in the late 1800's. The trip spans the Thlewiaza, The-Tinne, Kognak and Tha-Anne rivers and will probably include caribou and bear encounters, whitewater and giant ice-covered lakes, and insanely complex navigational challenges. Once the trip is underway, I'll be sharing a few photos from the field a small satellite device So if you're interested in adventure and how well jiu-jitsu works against giant Hudson Bay Polar Bears then follow along! Episode 346: Do you struggle to focus at BJJ Class? Do you zone out when you are at the gym? Small details can make a big difference in both lifting and rolling. Knowing when to tune in and really focus is important. In our distracted age of so much stimulus it is hard to have enough energy to lock in and pay attention. Being too comfortable, or leaving yourself too tired to dial in when your coach is explaining can leave you missing the point of the technique or drill. When it comes to the Gym it might be as simple as staring at your phone or getting distracted in a conversation may lead you not paying attention to how your body feels proprioceptively- which can lead to injury. Attention is a limited resource and sometimes you have more than others but knowing when to really focus will help you have a better session and get more out of your training whether you are in the weights room or on the mats rolling. Some times you are simply just trying to get your training in between business and family time but taking a beat to realise there are key moments when you need to Focus that are higher leverage than others, can help you make the most of your most important resource- your attention. He got an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan, saw his physiotherapist and while the scan didn't reveal much new info he was advised to talk to a Knee surgeon. Joey was under the impression that Surgery was unavoidable- Can a torn Meniscus heal itself?? BJJ as a body of knowledge is constantly growing and evolving with specialised techniques and strategies for both Gi and No-Gi grappling. JT & Joey dig deeper on what can help and hinder your learning at Jiu-Jitsu and why spending multiple sessions on one position or a sequence of attacks and defences can really help you achieve a good understanding and real learning.
