Doesn't stretching make your muscles weaker? Isn't stretching bad for strength? The answer is the complete opposite. JT & Joey eliminate the misunderstandings about stretching and explain why spending time improving your range of motion will help your strength level up. BJJ demands that your body move into all kinds of crazy positions. In order to be stronger on the mat and in the gym you need to have full access to all your body's potential. This episode will help you to unlock your body and step up your strength gains on the mat.

Have you ever hurt someone when rolling? Accidentally popped a mate's ankle? These are some of the toughest moments to deal with on the BJJ journey. Does hurting a team mate make you a bad person? Who is responsible in the heat of the moment? Knowing how to respond straight after is an important part of playing the Jiu-Jitsu game. You are putting your body on the line and betting your ligaments with every roll of the dice. Sometimes you get injured and other times you are the Injury maker. JT & Joey discuss the responsible things to do when you hurt your mate.
What's on your BJJ playlist? Got a favourite training Tune? Music can really enhance your mood and mental state coming in to Jiu-jitsu class. Whether you are into something heavy or a more high bpm vibe the right song can change your mental state. JT & Joey discuss their own preferences for getting mentally prepared for rolling and outline a method that can help you improve how you show up on the mat.
What is your Favourite Martial Arts Movie? JT & Joey have their favourite Fight flicks but they are not all the same. The films of 80's & 90's that inspired and guided both the Bulletproof Boys into the world of Martial Arts. However you came to the world of BJJ you may have started on the Martial Arts path through other more formal fighting styles. Who was your inspiration? What montage made you want to become a martial arts?
Ever had Gi Burn on your face? Lost some skin cells from rolling? Skin care is a topic that is not really talked about in the BJJ game especially for men. Off the back of the Staph discussion the boys felt that it's worth addressing what you can do to protect your first layer of immunity against infection. JT & Joey have very different skin types and different approaches for dealing with healing wounds and preventing infection.
Do you follow our program? Are you part of the Bulletproof For BJJ community? You may have heard JT & Joey reference their online program but not actually fully explained what is in the Program and why they have chosen the exercises. We answer all the questions that have been put on the table by you the listener: - Why does movement matter?- Is strength better than conditioning?- Where's the BJJ specific Moves?- What's the secret to strength and mobility?- Simple doesn't equal Easy At first glance the program appears to be simple but don't be fooled, the program will push you. The key to getting better for BJJ requires a good program that helps balance out the evils that rolling can do to your body.
Got a rash on your skin? A painful pimple on your knee? BJJ is an intimate activity and the ocean of bacteria you are exposed to when you roll is next level. "Staph" aka Staphylococcus aureus is a skin infection that can kill you if left untreated. Truths revealed and the stigma removed as the boys break down everything you need to know, best practices, training hygiene and how best to prevent these health issues. For your sake and for your team mates too, if you think you might have an infected cut or painful rash stay off the mats go to the doctor and get it checked!
Do belts still matter? Is the martial arts Hierarchy outdated? Which ever side of the fence you are on seniority and authority provides structure and gives direction. If you love the modern movement in BJJ toward No-Gi submission grappling, you may not respect the old ways and don't see the need for belts as long as you are skilful grappler. There are many world class athletes who have only trained a short period of time and built very effective games that are beating much more experienced blackbelts. From 10th Planet to DDS and now the B-Team, do these rebels of the new school have the next step in the evolution of the art? Or are the traditional standards of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu still relevant and key to developing great grapplers?
How many Gi's do you own? Which brand is the best? Both JT & Joey have their all time favourite Gi for very different reasons. Do you go for the look, the feel or the function? When you train a lot you will need at least 2-3. Here are some recommendations and cautionary tales a like for you to draw from to make an informed decision when you next purchase the BJJ pyjamas.
It takes Champions to make champions. But is that actually true? What it takes to win is not what it takes to teach. Being a BJJ Champion requires incredible levels of focus, discipline and self determination. Being a great coach requires great communication skills, setting a good example and empathy to relate to someone else's struggles. JT & Joey examine examples of great coaches who were not champions and phenomenal athletes who have proven to suck at coaching. Your relationship with your coach is one of the most important factors in the BJJ Journey and their past experience can really help or hinder your development.
Is it possible to improve at Jiu-jitsu without the risk of injury that rolling can bring? If you are older and not interested in going to war with young, MMA hungry savages you can definitely develop BJJ skills but will they work? Finding people who have a similar interest in training is key to your improvement whether they are pushing for championship glory or just want to enjoy learning cool skills. JT & Joey examine this interesting question and give guidance on how you can approach your own BJJ practice to get the best outcome.
Are you struggling with what life is throwing at you right now? JT & Joey speak candidly about everything that has been going on in Australia earlier in 2022 and other things that are going on in the world and what this can do to your confidence. When big things in life are going wrong it puts things in perspectives and BJJ problems can feel small. Injuries, health problems, trying to overcome stress it takes a lot of mental strength to endure. The boys open up about how they are dealing with these challenges and speak from the heart about everything that is going on.
What do you Bench? This question is not helpful for BJJ athletes and may even be harmful. Even though Barbell Bench Press is a very popular movement in modern day lifting, spending time lying on your back and pushing heavy weight off your chest isn't the best way to strengthen your upper body. If you really want a stronger upper body JT & Joey explore the alternatives to get you there and how you can avoid injury by changing up how you lift.
Do you have a Physiotherapist? Do they train BJJ? Siobhan Mooren came to Jiu-jitsu with martial arts experience from Karate and also playing AFL football. She has suffered a torn Labrum in her hip from wake boarding and had to eventually have surgery. For 6 months she trained and battled through the injury until she couldn't walk. Needless to say she is one tough human. Originally she wanted to be a veterinarian but her love of sport and lifting lead her towards studying physiotherapy. On today's episode she drops key insights into what you need to do to avoid injury and what it takes to bounce back. If you have an injury and live in QLD Australia and looking for a Great Physiotherapist you can book in with Siobhan by clicking the link below: [https://peregianspringsphysio.com.au/](https://peregianspringsphysio.com.au/)
Do you train Judo? How's your Double leg take down? Which ever style of stand up grappling you prefer, one of these has more carry over than the other. If you are looking to become a really well rounded grappler and want to do some extra training where should you spend your time? Judo is great for making some of the hardest and strongest grapplers around and wrestlers are some of the most athletic movers in sport. JT & Joey weigh up the pros and cons to give you the answer.
Skipping warm ups? Got some skills and causing some trouble? Being the middle child of the BJJ family you are taking shots from above and below. JT & Joey both recognise the risk and potential of a good purple belt and if you don't pay attention they can catch you slipping. Your experience at purple belt is good enough to threaten the higher belts but the lower belts have a target on your back. Depending on your journey a lot of your BJJ game is built at this stage in the game and you are starting to wake up to your potential and starting to come into your own. Competing, full time training, traveling internationally but how long can it be sustained? Is purple the most important belt? Whether you agree or not it is a great time in your jiu-jitsu life so live it up.
Do you take a rest round? Do you sit to the side when others are rolling? There is actually a disagreement between the Bulletproof Boys. JT is pushing you to not take a rest round to improve your standard. Joey believes it's better for you to take a rest round if you feel like it. Which choice do you make?
