Bulletproof For BJJ
Strength & conditioning, injury prevention, and mat life. Multiple episodes per week.
Hosted by JT & Joey.
Ever been cut off in traffic? Ever got a speeding ticket? BJJ is very much like driving a car but there are no speed limits, very few rules and almost no-one has insurance. The difficulty with BJJ is the driver and car are one. If the coach has not outlined the terms and conditions on what the rules are then it's hard to be mad at people going super hard if that is not breaking any rules. Communication is key to make sure that team mates know what kind of a roll you came for you may not want the Fast and Furious experience. No matter how you like to drive your body must be robust because physical strength and flexibility is your insurance policy. If you only had a pair of Dumbbells what 5 moves would you do? This is a banger of a question and the boys give their Top 5 which might surprise you... You are a beast on and off the mats and a small procedure has the surgeon telling you not to do anything for 8 weeks- what can you do to stay in shape? Injuries suck, but they suck even more when they are self inflicted. A wrist injury occurred in the name of victory on the mats but now there is rehab to be done - how to deal with a sore wrist? How strong do you need to be for BJJ? Is there such thing as too much strength? In BJJ culture strength often has shame thrown on it as a lack of technique. But we all know that being stronger is an advantage on the mats. If you are already lifting, feel strong and want to get stronger that is a great goal but how much more work do you need to do to get there? Do you even need to get any Stronger? The Bulletproof Boys examine the major lifts and discuss what level of strength you should be aiming relevant to your bodyweight. This should serve as a general purpose guide, so you can recognise when you are strong enough at a movement and instead of doubling down put that time and energy into something else that might help your Jiu-Jitsu more effectively. Is BJJ built on Humility or fought and won by Ego? Even though much of what is encouraged in the world of BJJ is to be humble and respectful, so much of the success we see in the competitive arena is brash shows of Ego. Trash talk, people beating their chests and making fun of other competitors does show much humility at all. The key question is- does be humble help your BJJ? It is a great quality as human to be modest but this is not necessarily going to help you improve at BJJ. The level of self belief and ego it takes to over come all the challenges BJJ throws at you in order to be great has little to do with Humility. Can Ego and Humility coexist or are they counter points? Let us know what you think in the Comments. If you have questions - the boys have Answers. On today's episode JT & Joey discuss what the new Sandbag program will look like and whether or not this type of training can overload the body before you hit the mats. If you depend on your body for your work what is the best strategy to not get injured? Also is it a good idea to keep rolling with a fully ruptured ACL and damaged meniscus? What's the worst injury you have had at BJJ? Are you always injured but not doing any rehab? BJJ is rough on your body, ignoring injuries and taking damage on a regular basis is often a source of pride to show toughness. Constantly being injured and complaining about it without taking action to fix it is not being a warrior- it's being a victim. BJJ does reward us for being tough but not taping won't actually help you get better at the art. Neglecting to look after yourself should not be a badge of honour and there needs to be a change in BJJ culture to help you stay in the game. Do you focus on mastering Techniques or understanding Concepts? A lot of early learning in BJJ is shaped and guided by the Instructor but at some point you will do your best to try to get better independently. Which is better to focus on- the technical details of a submission or the reason why it is applicable in the situation? The "How" & the 'Why" are both important components of mastering BJJ but where should you start? JT & Joey discuss how approaching the game from 2 very different angles can work, while also going deeper on the interplay between them and how this can unlock a new level of Jiu-Jitsu for you. Have you done a Crossfit Workout? Can you complete a W.O.D. and then roll in the same day? For some of you Crossfit is a way of life as much as BJJ, for others it might seem like a crazy sport for hardcore people who like to suffer.(Coincidence?) Both BJJ and Crossfit have massive dedicated communities who live and die by the Cultures credos. Though they may seem to be polar opposite the 2 cultures have more in common than you might realise. JT & Joey break down what Crossfit does well and the value that our BJJ Fam can derive from another group of hardcore, dedicated people. They also highlight where it can go wrong and how this is avoidable to get the best out of this intense sport that mirrors our own. Have you ever done Sandbag Training? It is one of the toughest tools to help grapplers get fitter and stronger. The slippery and unpredictable nature of sandbags closely resembles squeezing and controlling another human. During Covid Lockdown in 2020 JT trained with sandbags and a couple of Kettlebells and saw his strength skyrocket. Every week he got stronger which blew him away. Both the Bulletproof boys use Sandbags in their strength training and they discuss how the raw strength and grappling specific gripping has direct cross over to rolling. This is a wide ranging discussion of how less technical lifting and greater force production results in massive strength gains for BJJ. Have your lost your motivation for BJJ? Lost the love for rolling? Battling with motivation is a part of the Jiu-Jitsu journey and may result in time off the mat and you are finding it hard to get back. You may be grinding and seeing minimal progress which is killing your enjoyment of being on the mats. Lack of motivation can be an indicator that the fun and novelty has gone out of your BJJ. No matter how far along the Jiu-Jitsu journey you are a drop in motivation can result in a negative spiral which may cause you to take time off. JT & Joey discuss how removing expectation and making your training more about fun and being playful can reignite your love of the game so you can get back into the BJJ habit get your mojo back. How good are BJJ escape holidays and are they worth the money? Lat but not least is a question from a friend of the podcast who is recovering from surgery for a Bucket handle tear in their meniscus. Sean O'Malley recently defeated Aljamain Sterling via TKO. This sparked the conversation between JT & Joey about the elite grappler Vs Elite Striker debate as to who would prevail. This recent fight shows that a superior striker in the form of Sean (Who also grapples) took out an ultra tough grappler Aljamain ( who also strikes.) There are many examples of this classic combat style match up where grapplers have gotten the better of strikers. That said if you cannot get your hands on your opponent how can you win as a grappler. The age old debate rages on- let us know what you think in the comments.
Do you like to get stronger all year round? Train a lot but have found your gains...Plateauing? You are stuck doing the same old workout over and over again but it has stopped getting you results. One of the biggest problems is a lack of progressive overload and structured exercise progression. A structured program is better than just doing a single workout to keep you gaining all year long. There is a lot of time and energy that has built and refined the Bulletproof For BJJ programs. Knowing how to transition between programs is another key element of continual improvement. The boys discuss how you can modify your training and not use the "Porrada" mentality as going hard everyday won't get you stronger. Planning and staying consistent is key to get your M.E.D. -Minimum Effective Dose, so you keep getting stronger and your JIu-Jitsu gets better. Do you always feel sore after BJJ? Suffering big body aches from rolling? The Jiu-Jitsu grind on the body is real. Here in lies the physical cost of Porrada- physical pain on many levels. JT & Joey discuss their own experiences of post rolling soreness and how to properly deal with it. They clear up one of the biggest misunderstandings in BJJ- The fact that it is resistance training from all angles. This result is very intense Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) combine this with the impact trauma of submissions, getting stacked, coping a Knee Ride or a mean crossface! To deal with this accumulation of damage it's important not to ignore the causes and rely on pain killers or anti-inflammatories. It starts with a disciplined approached to not roll to the death and if the intensity of the exchange is outside of your control implement strategies to have lighter rolls to alternate your intensity on the mat.
