Got a rash on your skin? A painful pimple on your knee? BJJ is an intimate activity and the ocean of bacteria you are exposed to when you roll is next level. "Staph" aka Staphylococcus aureus is a skin infection that can kill you if left untreated. Do belts still matter? Is the martial arts Hierarchy outdated? Which ever side of the fence you are on seniority and authority provides structure and gives direction. If you love the modern movement in BJJ toward No-Gi submission grappling, you may not respect the old ways and don't see the need for belts as long as you are skilful grappler. There are many world class athletes who have only trained a short period of time and built very effective games that are beating much more experienced blackbelts. From 10th Planet to DDS and now the B-Team, do these rebels of the new school have the next step in the evolution of the art? Or are the traditional standards of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu still relevant and key to developing great grapplers?

It takes Champions to make champions. But is that actually true? What it takes to win is not what it takes to teach. Being a BJJ Champion requires incredible levels of focus, discipline and self determination. Being a great coach requires great communication skills, setting a good example and empathy to relate to someone else's struggles. JT & Joey examine examples of great coaches who were not champions and phenomenal athletes who have proven to suck at coaching. Your relationship with your coach is one of the most important factors in the BJJ Journey and their past experience can really help or hinder your development.

What do you Bench? This question is not helpful for BJJ athletes and may even be harmful. Even though Barbell Bench Press is a very popular movement in modern day lifting, spending time lying on your back and pushing heavy weight off your chest isn't the best way to strengthen your upper body. If you really want a stronger upper body JT & Joey explore the alternatives to get you there and how you can avoid injury by changing up how you lift.

Do you have a Physiotherapist? Do they train BJJ? Siobhan Mooren came to Jiu-jitsu with martial arts experience from Karate and also playing AFL football. She has suffered a torn Labrum in her hip from wake boarding and had to eventually have surgery. For 6 months she trained and battled through the injury until she couldn't walk. Skipping warm ups? Got some skills and causing some trouble? Being the middle child of the BJJ family you are taking shots from above and below. JT & Joey both recognise the risk and potential of a good purple belt and if you don't pay attention they can catch you slipping. Your experience at purple belt is good enough to threaten the higher belts but the lower belts have a target on your back. Depending on your journey a lot of your BJJ game is built at this stage in the game and you are starting to wake up to your potential and starting to come into your own. Competing, full time training, traveling internationally but how long can it be sustained? Is purple the most important belt? Whether you agree or not it is a great time in your jiu-jitsu life so live it up.

Have you ever been in a fight? Had to defend yourself? Both JT & Joey have had their run ins with real life violence and have survived to tell the tale. These are those tales. The boys don't condone street fighting but when you are attacked or thrust into the middle of a scrap you need to save yourself and maybe your friends too. It all happens so quickly and it doesn't always end well... If you can walk away that's the best option but sometimes it's not possible.
