Carpio Jiu Jitsu is a Checkmat affiliate in Long Beach, California, offering comprehensive Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training for all ages and skill levels. The academy focuses on the learning process rather than external rewards such as medals or belts, emphasizing comprehension and continuous improvement. Their philosophy is straightforward: "Learn. Stay Curious. Enjoy the Process. Master your Craft." The gym's mission is to share the countless benefits of jiu jitsu with the community. Through structured programs, students develop not only physical fitness and proven self-defense skills, but also increased confidence, resilience, and problem-solving abilities. The academy provides a training environment that creates an immersive learning experience through an all-inclusive, direct approach to teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Professor Gustavo Carpio, the head instructor, began training in October 1998 in Lima, Peru under Professor Jorge Balarin. He later trained under Professor Sergio Correa "Marra" who awarded him his purple belt, brown belt, and black belt. As a competitor, Professor Gustavo achieved gold at the American Nationals at purple belt, and earned bronze medals at the Pan Americans as both a purple and brown belt. His most notable achievement was a bronze medal at the 2008 World Championship as a brown belt. After working in psychology, he moved to the United States in 2009 to teach and compete in jiu jitsu full time. From 2004 to 2009, he taught and trained at Sniper Gym in Lima, Peru.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. Brazilian jiu-jitsu was formed from Kodokan Judo ground fighting (Ne-Waza) fundamentals that were taught to Luiz França and Carlos Gracie by master Mitsuyo Maeda. Brazilian jiu-jitsu eventually came to be its own art through the experimentations, practices, and adaptation from the Judo knowledge of Carlos and Hélio Gracie, who then passed their knowledge on to their extended family. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense. Sparring (commonly referred to as “rolling”) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through its ranking system. Since its inception in 1882, its parent art of Judo was separated from older systems of Japanese ju-jitsu by an important difference that was passed on to Brazilian jiu-jitsu: it is not solely a martial art: it is also a sport; a method for promoting physical fitness and building character in young people; and, ultimately, a way of life.

What started as an idea between two good friends: Marco Canha and James Roach along with the combination of their passion for Jiu Jitsu and their friendship. Checkmat Aalborg

Checkmat Aalborg is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy located in Aalborg, Denmark, offering training for both gi and no-gi grappling. The gym is part of the prestigious CheckMat team, one of the world's leading BJJ organizations known for producing 15-time world champions. CheckMat is led by brothers Leonardo "Leozinho" Vieira and Ricardo "Ricardinho" Vieira, renowned figures in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community. The academy emphasizes a training philosophy focused on ground fighting using grips and joint locks rather than strikes. Training takes place in an informal atmosphere where beginners train alongside experienced practitioners, creating a collaborative learning environment. What makes BJJ unique at Checkmat Aalborg is the ability to spar at full intensity during every training session, made possible by the absence of strikes and kicks. This allows students to develop practical grappling skills safely and effectively. The instructional team includes Camilla, Jeppe, Kim, Nicolai, Asger, Emil, Thorbjørn, Sigurd, and Malte. The academy offers programs for various ages and skill levels, including kids classes for ages 5-9, fundamentals courses, no-gi basics, and advanced training for experienced grapplers. Training is available six days per week with open mat sessions on weekends, catering to those training for recreation, fitness, skill development, or competition preparation.

Checkmat Copenhagen

Arte Suave is one of the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu clubs in Denmark, founded in 2002 by Shimon Mochizuki. The club began after Shimon and a training partner had been traveling to Malmö weekly to train BJJ with MMA Alliance, as there were no BJJ clubs in Denmark at that time. Peter Blackwell from MMA Alliance helped establish the first BJJ club in Copenhagen, starting in a basement near Vanløse station. Since then, the club has been located in Østerbro, Nørrebro, and has been in NordVest (Northwest Copenhagen) since May 2009. Arte Suave has developed into one of the best BJJ clubs in Europe and is part of the CheckMat organization, one of the world's leading BJJ teams led by Leonardo "Leozinho" Vieira and his brother Ricardo Vieira. CheckMat instructors visit the club several times a year to teach seminars. The gym maintains high standards by regularly hosting visiting instructors for seminars and training camps. Arte Suave is the only club in Denmark with world champions and European champions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The gym has over 5 European champions and over 6 world champions, and has competed at ADCC (the world championship in submission wrestling) three times as the only Danish club to do so. The club has consistently ranked in the top 3 at major Scandinavian tournaments including Swedish Open BJJ, Scandinavian Open, Danish Open BJJ, and Gameness. Head instructor Shimon Mochizuki leads the program with a focus on competition excellence and technical mastery.

The Dojo Academy was founded in January 2015 as a team effort to spread Jiu Jitsu and its healthy lifestyle and make positive impact on the community. Our Coaches are the first generation of the Straight edge Fighters Program; a program that installs the values and concepts of discipline, loyalty, respect, honour and the importance of sports. This program emphasizes a drug and smoke free athlete in order to build a better and stronger generation. Our Coaches are patient, well-trained, experienced and ready to help you reach your goals. The Dojo’s vision is to offer a world class instruction in a traditional yet safe environment. We are focused on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instead of following the popular trend of being a commercial Jiu Jitsu/MMA school.

Rambukk Kampsportsenter is a martial arts center located in Råholt, Norway, offering a comprehensive range of combat sports and fitness programs for all ages. Founded by Audun Martinsen and Arnfinn Martinsen, Rambukk provides a welcoming environment where members can develop their skills through quality instruction and a strong community spirit. The gym specializes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a Checkmat affiliate under Ricardo and Leo Vieira. Head instructor Audun Martinsen holds a first-degree black belt under Rico Vieira and has been training actively since 2010. He has achieved multiple international competition successes, including two IBJJF Master European Championship gold medals and two silver medals. Audun also brings extensive experience in self-defense and arrest techniques from his time as a police instructor. In addition to BJJ, the gym offers high-quality Muay Thai instruction led by Frank Hofstetter, a Swedish champion and World Championship medalist who has been training since 1995 and brings years of experience training in Thailand. Rambukk offers diverse training programs including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (gi and no-gi), Muay Thai, Submission Wrestling, CrossTraining (functional fitness), and Yoga (Vinyasa and flexibility-focused). The gym caters to all age groups with specialized kids programs (BJJ Kids, Thai Kids, and Ninjaskolen for ages 4-6), youth programs (ages 14-19), and adult classes ranging from beginner to competition level. The training philosophy emphasizes athletic development combined with discipline, technical quality, and a supportive community atmosphere.
