## We're not just a gym. We're the first. Identity Jiu-Jitsu is Seattle's International District's first and only BJJ club. We didn't choose this neighborhood because it was convenient — we chose it because it's ours. Under new ownership, we're building something that belongs to this community: a principled coaching environment, a culture where everyone feels like they've already been here for years, and a place wh

Mat Chess Mixed Martial Arts logo

Mat Chess Mixed Martial Arts

5508 35th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98105

Founded in 2011 by former schoolteacher and accomplished Brazilian jiu-jitsu Black Belt Andrew Perkins, we formed Mat Chess with the focus of maximizing student martial arts progress with thoughtful, systems-based learning, similar to what you’d find in an academic setting. We know how people learn, yet the martial arts world was somehow devoid of this understanding. Our approach to instruction, plus a competitive but uplifting environment, has our students progress at an accelerated rate. Ultimately, it’s made Mat Chess the premier mixed martial arts gym in Seattle. We offer classes in all major mixed martial arts components, including jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling and combinations thereof in our MMA training. Whether you’re new to martial arts or an active, experienced competitor, Mat Chess has the structure to support you and your goals. Our approach extends to our kids’ martial arts classes as well. We’re proud to offer both our kids’ Brazilian jiu-jitsu and our Bryant After-School program, both of which benefit our young martial artists on and off the mats alike. Come in for a free trial class to see the value of what we do!

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
