From Broken Collarbone to GOLD | Steve's BJJ Comeback

From 10th Planet Colorado Springs

September 23, 2026

From a broken collarbone to a gold medal and a blue belt. This is Steve's jiu-jitsu comeback.

At his previous tournament as a white belt, Steve suffered a broken collarbone. Now, at over 50 years old, he's back on the competition mats at the All Valley Jiu-Jitsu Tournament, hosted by Pikes Peak Grappling in Colorado Springs.

But the road to gold wasn't straightforward.

Steve opens the tournament with a narrow 1–0 points loss. In his second match, he fights back with a commanding 9–0 points victory. With everything still to play for, Steve enters his third match and finishes his opponent by submission in the fourth minute, securing GOLD.

Three matches. One comeback. A gold medal.

This 17-minute video follows Steve through the tournament with interviews from Steve and Coach, a look at the X-ray from his previous injury, and between-match commentary that tells the story as it unfolds.

And the story doesn't end at the tournament.

At his very next class, Steve receives his BLUE BELT!

His message after everything he's been through? Sometimes the old advice really does work: Just show up.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
