Ep. 124: Ratchet Control, feat. Matt Kwan

From BJJ Mental Models

May 3, 2021 · 1:01:43 · E124

This week, Matt and Steve talk about ratchet control: a powerful mental model for using limb rotation to break alignment.

There are two directions of ratchet control:

  • Internal rotation: Kimuras, heel hooks, reaps- External rotation: Americanas, knee flares. While both are effective, internal rotation normally breaks alignment more than external rotation. Internal rotation also offers a path to the back.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
