Ep. 115: The BITE Model and Influence Continuum, feat. Matt "Aesopian" Kirtley

From BJJ Mental Models

March 8, 2021 · 1:10:09 · E115

This week, Steve is joined by Matt Kirtley, best known as Aesopian. In addition to being a moderator of Reddit's /r/bjj and a long-time Jiu-Jitsu blogger, Matt is a critic of martial arts cults. Matt joins us today to discuss the BITE (behavior, information, thought, emotional control) Model and influence continuum.

The BITE Model and influence continuum are concepts defined by cult expert Steven Hassan. They can help identify whether an organization's influence is positive or negative. They're a great way to determine if you or a loved one are being manipulated by a cult or cult-like organization.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
