Ep. 97: Position Series: Turtle, feat. Priit Mihkelson

From BJJ Mental Models

November 2, 2020 · 1:24:08 · E97

This week, we're joined by defensive strategist Priit Mihkelson! Much to Matt's chagrin, Steve and Priit espouse the benefits of turtle and why it's an underappreciated position. Priit shares some great philosophy on how shoring up your defense can give you the confidence to be more effective in your offense.

Priit's tips for turtle:

  • Keep your head on the mat- Use the boxer shoulder, or "Stephen Hawking" (head tilt)- Keep your elbows on your hips- Don't put your elbows on the mat- Protect your neck with your wrists.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
