Ep. 84: The Third Place

From BJJ Mental Models

August 3, 2020 · 1:08:50 · E84

This week, Steve and Matt discuss the concept of the third place. It's a sociological concept coined by Ray Oldenburg, who argues that we have three important places in our life:

  • The first place: your home- The second place: your work- The third place: the anchor to your community. The third place is where we blow off steam, get away from the demands of the first two places, and build relationships. For most of us, our third place is Jiu-Jitsu.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
