Ep. 70: Staying Loose

From BJJ Mental Models

April 27, 2020 · 59:42 · E70

Learning to stay loose is one of the quickest ways to improve your Jiu-Jitsu. This week, Steve and Matt explain the importance of staying loose, how to develop awareness of when you're too tense, and when it's appropriate to use tension.

Why you should stay loose:

  • It masks your intentions- It saves energy and prevents muscle burnout- It denies your opponent leverage.
When it's okay to use tension:

  • When you're doing so for a reason- When your tension cannot be exploited.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
