Gym Cancer Culture (Episode 348)

From Chewjitsu

January 27, 2025 · 53:28

On this episode, Chewy and Eugene answer a question from Collin who asks, "How do you recognize and fix gym culture without enforcers, and also what do you do if one of the enforcers becomes a gym bully"?

We discuss how and when a "gym enforcer" should be used, one of the most corrosive things that can happen in the gym, "Absolute Cancerous Behaviors" and "Relative Cancerous Behaviors," some of the cancerous situations that Chewy had to address at the gym, something that would lead to immediate removal from the gym, reasons Chewy wouldn't promote a student, "pulling rank" at a gym, and our opinions on gauntlets.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
