Brown Belt Ready to Leave Prestigious Gym over Lack of Gi Training

Brown Belt Ready to Leave Prestigious Gym over Lack of Gi Training

From Chewjitsu

September 17, 2026

Today’s BJJ Q&A question is from a Brown Belt who’s a gi nerd and his gym doesn’t do much gi anymore.

He says he loves the gi, the coaches and so forth. But over the years the gi classes have taken a hit and there’s few of them to do. At the same time, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym recently opened up near him that has a lot of gi classes and some good training partners.

So he asks how to navigate this situation. He wants to do more gi but doesn’t want to be disloyal to his BJJ coaches.

So I answer the question, hopefully it’s helpful if this is something you’re struggling with.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
