Ep. 18 | Travis Lutter: UFC Fighter to Coach | The Truth About Fighting, Injuries & Longevity
From CMJJ Headquarters
What does it really take to become a fighter—and more importantly, to walk away from it the right way?
In this episode of Coffee Time with Carlos Machado, Carlos sits down with his first black belt, UFC veteran, and longtime martial artist Travis Lutter for a conversation that goes far beyond wins and losses.
Travis Lutter is best known for his time in the UFC and as a high-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Carlos Machado. But his story is much deeper than competition. From wrestling in South Dakota to discovering Jiu-Jitsu in the late ‘90s, Travis made a conscious decision early on: he wasn’t going to rely on his strengths—he was going to rebuild himself from the ground up. That mindset carried him through world-level competition, MMA fights, and eventually into coaching. Along the way, he developed a philosophy centered on position over submission, constant evolution, and staying true to your core style.
But this episode also explores the darker side of fighting.
Travis shares real experiences with concussions, gym culture, and the pressure to push through injuries. In one of the most intense moments of the episode, he recounts stepping into a fight with a broken vertebrae—something that could have left him paralyzed.
It’s a powerful reminder that being tough isn’t always about pushing forward… sometimes it’s about knowing when to step back.
Now as a coach, Travis emphasizes longevity, smart training, and protecting athletes from the mistakes he’s seen—and experienced—firsthand.
This episode is packed with lessons for fighters, coaches, and anyone chasing growth in life.
