Kids Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Ages 6–8 Arm Lock From Mount & Minimal Force

From Coastal Jiu Jitsu

October 28, 2026

Getting a submission doesn't mean hurting someone. In this kids class for ages 6–8 at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, the children work on the arm lock from mount and the head-and-arm choke, with a constant focus on control and minimal force.

If you want your child to be able to protect themselves without becoming aggressive, this class is a good example of how we teach both.

Inside this class

We review the arm lock from mount and the head-and-arm finish: hands together, shoulder into the wrist. The children ask good questions, like what happens if the partner slips the arm out, and learn what to do next, including choosing to take the back.

We cover the pinky grip, keeping the head in the right place, pinching the knees, and not switching sides when you already have the arm. On the Americana and head-and-arm, they outrigger their feet so a bigger partner can't roll them. The coach ends with an important point: in class we want more submissions, but we never need to extend an arm lock. Control is the goal.

Key technical concepts

Control is the goal. Submissions are practiced with control and minimal force.

Ask 'what if.' The children learn what to do when a partner escapes, including taking the back.

Stay balanced. A wide, stable base keeps a bigger partner from rolling you.

Why this work matters

We want children who can protect themselves without becoming aggressive. This class teaches both. Every child is coached at their own level, and partners learn to keep each other safe.

Every kids class at Coastal Jiu Jitsu is built around our Five Rules of Engagement:
1. Avoid the fight at all costs.
2. If punched or kicked, defend yourself.
3. If called names, follow the three T steps: talk, tell, tackle.
4. Never punch or kick the bully—establish control and negotiate.
5. When applying submissions, use minimal force and negotiate.

New to Jiu Jitsu?

Your child doesn't need any experience to start. New children learn the basics first through drills and games, with coaching at every step. Classes are grouped by age, so children train with others at a similar stage, and partners are taught to look after each other.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
