Adult Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Single Leg X to X-Guard & Collar-Sleeve Angles

From Coastal Jiu Jitsu

October 28, 2026

Missing openings in a roll is normal. Building the reflexes to catch them takes time. In this adult gi class at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, the coach answers a question about missed transitions and works single leg X, X-guard and the collar-sleeve angle.

If you want a challenge that keeps you curious, this class shows how one student's question shapes a whole lesson.

Inside this class

The lesson starts with a question: "I feel like I'm missing opportunities." The answer is mat time and trying and failing, plus drills that build reflexes. We work off-balancing, putting your hands on the mat when the partner's legs are wide, and thinking about the back whenever you have an overhook from underneath.

From single leg X, when the partner pushes the foot off, go to X-guard, extend them onto their hands and swim under. We cover breaking grips, staying in your strong position, and the collar-sleeve angle: a deep collar grip, pushing through the feet, switching to the pant grip and using the elbow to scoop the foot. Rounds close the class.

Key technical concepts

Reflexes take mat time. Seeing openings in a roll comes from trying, failing and drilling.

Off-balance first. A partner who is off balance is much easier to attack.

Stay in your strong position. When you have a good position, keep it and build from there.

Why this work matters

One student's question shaped the whole lesson, which shows how much questions help everyone learn. Students learn to make a plan, notice what isn't working, and try another option, and the more experienced partner sets the pace so people at every level can train hard and keep coming back.

New to Jiu Jitsu?

You don't need any wrestling or Jiu Jitsu background to start. Beginners learn the basics first, drill at a controlled pace, and build up to live training with coaching along the way. Questions are always welcome, and partners look after each other so everyone can keep training.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
