Adult Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | After the Base Recovery: Speed Drills & Top Spin
From Coastal Jiu Jitsu
Getting your base back after a sweep attempt is good. Knowing what to do next is better. In this adult gi class at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, we use speed drills and the top spin to connect recovering your base to passing and taking the back.
If you're a busy adult looking for a workout that also builds real skill and confidence, this class shows how we coach from what we see in your rounds.
Inside this class
The coach starts with what the film showed: the group was good at not giving up the point and fighting back to hands and hips, but then went right back inside the partner's legs. The plan is to fix that in the gi with grips, then do the same in no-gi without them.
We work throwing the top leg inside, pulling the head down with a collar grip and using proper footwork to pass, and keeping chest pressure instead of letting the arm get caught. Speed drills come next, with the focus on timing rather than speed. Then we cover the top spin: one knee down and one up, back foot pushing, knee to the armpit, hand on the belt line. Along the way the coach explains why training with many different partners in a group class is so valuable.

Key technical concepts
Don't go back to where you started. After getting your base back, move forward instead of returning inside the legs.
Timing over speed. Moving at the right moment matters more than moving fast.
Train with many partners. Different body types teach you things one partner can't.
Why this work matters
The class is built from what the coach saw in recent rounds, so students work on the problems they actually run into. Students learn to make a plan, notice what isn't working, and try another option, and the more experienced partner sets the pace so people at every level can train hard and keep coming back.
New to Jiu Jitsu?
You don't need any wrestling or Jiu Jitsu background to start. Beginners learn the basics first, drill at a controlled pace, and build up to live training with coaching along the way. Questions are always welcome, and partners look after each other so everyone can keep training.
