Adult Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Bottom Side Mount Escapes & Elbow Frames
From Coastal Jiu Jitsu
Adult Jiu Jitsu at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, Florida gives adults a place to work on the positions they usually avoid. In this gi class, students spend the hour on their weak spots—especially the bottom of side mount—building elbow frames, connecting to their partner, and escaping without wasting energy.
For busy adults, professionals, and parents looking for a challenge that works the body and the mind, this is a real look at how we train. Instead of only drilling what already feels good, the class asks students to name what they're bad at and start fixing it.
Inside this class
The coach opens by flipping the usual plan: after weeks of imposing strong positions, the group lists the places they get stuck—bottom of side mount, turtle, mount, and having the back taken. The common fix starts with elbow placement. Elbows tucked toward the ribs, wrists connecting through the fingers, and getting to the side with the feet instead of pushing with the arms.
Students drill connecting without muscling, clearing a hand off the head, and walking the head up with the feet. Positional rounds follow, with the coach correcting lost feet, flat backs, and rushed escapes. A key idea lands mid-class: when your partner is only holding position, keep your hands safe and wait. When they open up to attack—going for a mount, an arm, or a collar grip—that's your window to finish the escape. Near the end, the gi options on top are clear too: a collar grip and a belt grip that keep you connected while you wait for the opening.

Key technical concepts
Elbows before everything. Under side mount, elbows tucked toward the ribs keep weight off you without handing your partner an easy attack. Elbows over your head is the worst case.
Connect, then move. Attach with the wrists and fingers so you aren't pushing with pure strength. Once you're connected, use your feet to get to your side.
Wait for the attack. If your partner is only holding, keep your hands safe and stay calm. When they open up to mount, submit, or adjust, that's when you finish the escape.
Why this work matters
Most people train their strengths. Spending time on the positions you hate builds a more complete game and a calmer mind when things go wrong. Adults leave with a clear checklist—elbows, connection, feet, wait—instead of a pile of random moves.
The class also shows how we look after each other. The more experienced partner sets the pace and keeps everyone safe, so people at every level can train hard and keep coming back.
