Adult Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Passing Speed Drills & Getting Your Base Back

From Coastal Jiu Jitsu

October 27, 2026

Some of the most useful work happens before class even starts. In this adult class at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, we run the passing speed drills you can use to warm up, then work on what to do once you've recovered your base.

If you want a workout that also teaches a useful skill, these drills are a good place to see it.

Inside this class

The coach walks through the speed drills: hold the feet, get to the knees, walk the feet, and push the knees together. We talk about keeping your knee inside the thigh, belt line or rib so the partner's knees stay outside, and about a good partner shrimping out through your hip line, not your knee line.

We work baiting a single leg and driving weight into the hip, then a drill that resets every time the partner turtles or comes to the front headlock. The last section covers facing your partner, what to do next after getting your base back, and breaking grips to come back up to your feet.

Key technical concepts

Warm up with a purpose. Simple speed drills get your body moving and build the footwork you need for passing.

Keep your partner's knees outside. Staying close and controlling their hips makes it hard for them to recover guard.

Know your next step. Getting your base back is only half the job. Have a plan for what comes after.

Why this work matters

Simple drills done well add up. Adults who train here get a workout that also builds a skill, and the habit of planning one step ahead. Students learn to make a plan, notice what isn't working, and try another option, and the more experienced partner sets the pace so people at every level can train hard and keep coming back.

New to Jiu Jitsu?

You don't need any wrestling or Jiu Jitsu background to start. Beginners learn the basics first, drill at a controlled pace, and build up to live training with coaching along the way. Questions are always welcome, and partners look after each other so everyone can keep training.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
