Adult Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Passing De La Riva & Reverse De La Riva
From Coastal Jiu Jitsu
Adult Jiu Jitsu at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, Florida gives adults a way to work hard, think clearly, and build patience under pressure. In this gi class, students continue their work on leg work and guard passing, learning how to get past the De La Riva and reverse De La Riva guards and settle into side control.
For busy adults, parents, and professionals, this is a look at how we train. The coach adds detail in layers, partners drill with steady feedback, and the class finishes with positional rounds.
Inside this class
The lesson reviews why a partner might use the reverse De La Riva and what they can do from it, then breaks down how to pass it. Students start with an easier version of the drill, then add the partner's pant grip and work through how to deal with it.
A key idea is patience: rather than forcing the pass, build tension on your partner's grip until they let go. Students then work on passing to side control, holding the position, and thinking about points in competition. Positional rounds and a recap close the class.

Key technical concepts
Patience beats force. When your partner has a strong grip, don't rush. Build tension and wait until the grip breaks before moving forward.
Use your legs, not just your hands. Leg work helps you get past your partner's legs and keeps you from getting trapped in their guard.
Hold the position. Once you pass, settle into side control before deciding what to do next.
Why this work matters
Many adults are used to pushing harder when something isn't working. On the mat, students learn that slowing down, staying calm, and waiting for the right moment often works better. It's a useful lesson for stressful days off the mat too.
The coach builds technique the same way: one layer at a time, so students of different levels can keep progressing.
