Adult No-Gi Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Staying Connected in Phase Four

Adult No-Gi Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Staying Connected in Phase Four

From Coastal Jiu Jitsu

October 29, 2026

In the gi, grips do a lot of the work. In no-gi you have to connect another way. In this Adult No-Gi class at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, we continue phase four of the guard and work on staying connected without the gi.

If you want a challenge that keeps your mind as busy as your body, this is a good look at how we learn.

Inside this class

The coach recaps the gi session, which was about grips and four points of control with outside and inside De La Riva and upgrading to single leg X and X-guard. Then he covers the strategy without grips. Partners drill from phase three, wrestling up when it's open. The key concept is attacking as a unit instead of with your limbs. Rounds follow: the top person fights to stay dominant, and the bottom person doesn't accept it.

Key technical concepts

Connect without grips. In no-gi you have to stay attached to your partner in other ways.

Wrestling up is a valid choice. Coming up to the feet can be the best option from the bottom.

Move as a unit. Attack with your whole body, not just your arms and legs.

Why this work matters

Working the same concept in both gi and no-gi helps adults understand the idea behind the technique, not just the steps. Students learn to make a plan, notice what isn't working, and try another option, and the more experienced partner sets the pace so people at every level can train hard and keep coming back.

This video is also an honest look at a normal day of training here. Nobody is performing for the camera: you see the questions, the corrections, the missed attempts, and the small wins that add up over time. If you've wondered what a class actually feels like before you walk in, this is it. Come try one, ask questions, and see for yourself.

New to Jiu Jitsu?

You don't need any wrestling or Jiu Jitsu background to start. Beginners learn the basics first, drill at a controlled pace, and build up to live training with coaching along the way. Questions are always welcome, and partners look after each other so everyone can keep training.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
