Adult Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Seated Guard: Wrestle Up, Sweep, or Take the Back

From Coastal Jiu Jitsu

October 29, 2026

From a seated guard you have three good options: wrestle up, sweep, or take the back. In this adult class at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, we work all three and practice staying aggressive so your partner never gets a chance to relax.

If you're new and worried about keeping up, this class welcomes visitors and lower belts and shows how each round builds on the last.

Inside this class

We welcome a couple of visitors, then start with the most efficient way to the back from seated. The difference from wrestling is that you have easier access to the angles. Be very aggressive from seated: if your partner gets time to relax, they're forming a plan against you.

We drill with a little more resistance, switch roles, then work off-balancing with a kick when the partner is heavy on the foot, and elbows turning in to get the leg over the shoulder. In rounds, the bottom person tries to wrestle up, sweep or take the back, and the top person doesn't accept any of it. The coach finishes with snapping down and carrying the head like a football.

Key technical concepts

Three options from seated. You can wrestle up, sweep, or take the back.

Stay aggressive. If your partner gets time to relax, they start forming a plan against you.

Don't accept the position. The person on top works just as hard to stay there.

Why this work matters

Visitors and newer students train right alongside experienced members, and each round builds on the last. Students learn to make a plan, notice what isn't working, and try another option, and the more experienced partner sets the pace so people at every level can train hard and keep coming back.

New to Jiu Jitsu?

You don't need any wrestling or Jiu Jitsu background to start. Beginners learn the basics first, drill at a controlled pace, and build up to live training with coaching along the way. Questions are always welcome, and partners look after each other so everyone can keep training.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
