Adult Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Establishing Your Guard & Finishing the Sweep

From Coastal Jiu Jitsu

October 29, 2026

Every guard starts with a grip. In this adult gi class at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, we start by establishing the guard you want, then work on refacing your partner, finishing the sweep and knowing where the next score is.

If you're a busy adult who wants a challenge for your mind and body, this class shows how the guard phases connect.

Inside this class

We start from whatever grip you can get: belt, collar or sleeve. When the partner breaks a grip and turns, you turn with them and reface. We talk about knee and shin placement, how the partner can lift your base, and keeping your belly button toward them to stay ahead in the match.

In questions, the coach explains his own approach: get attached with grips first, try far guards like collar-sleeve and spider guard, then closer guards. When one fails, go back to phase one and pick the next guard. Rounds go to a dominant position or a submission, and the recap covers not getting scored on while finding your next closest score through back takes and wrestling up.

Key technical concepts

Get attached first. A guard starts with a grip, whether that's the belt, collar or sleeve.

Face your partner. Turning to keep facing them keeps you ahead in the match.

Go back to phase one. When one guard fails, reset and pick the next one.

Why this work matters

The guard phases give adults a simple map for a complicated position, so they always know what to work on next. Students learn to make a plan, notice what isn't working, and try another option, and the more experienced partner sets the pace so people at every level can train hard and keep coming back.

New to Jiu Jitsu?

You don't need any wrestling or Jiu Jitsu background to start. Beginners learn the basics first, drill at a controlled pace, and build up to live training with coaching along the way. Questions are always welcome, and partners look after each other so everyone can keep training.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
