Adult No-Gi Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Beat the Cross Face From Side Control
From Coastal Jiu Jitsu
Adult No-Gi Jiu Jitsu at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, Florida gives adults a place to practice getting out of bad positions without relying on gi grips. In this class, students work on one of the toughest spots on the bottom of side control: a partner with a tight cross face and a knee driving into the hips.
For busy adults, professionals, and parents looking for a challenge that works the body and the mind, this is a real look at how we train. The class starts with the problems students actually ran into and builds the lesson around fixing them.
Inside this class
The coach asks the group what gave them trouble on the bottom, and the answer is the cross face, with the partner's head down tight. The demonstration shows how to stop that pressure early, build frames on the hips, put the feet on the mat, walk the hips away, and then turn back in. When the partner has to choose between keeping the head down and driving the knee in, a gap opens, and the elbow flares into that space.
A big theme is patience. Instead of one big burst, students build tension with their frames and wait for their partner's hands to come apart. When that happens, the plan is simple: shrimp out, get the knee inside, and keep moving toward guard or the top. The coach also explains that a top player usually controls either the head and shoulders or the hips, which helps the bottom player know where the space will be.
Students drill the escape with partners, switch partners, and get coaching on details like moving the hand to a new job once the knee is in. The class finishes with live escape rounds that start right after a guard pass, so students practice building frames before the pin is settled.

Key technical concepts
Don't give up the cross face. A tight cross face makes the bottom much harder. Building frames early, even while your partner is still passing, keeps the escape simple.
Build tension, then wait. Frames are there to slow your partner down. When their hands come apart, that's the moment to move.
Every part gets a new job. Once your knee is inside and doing the work, your hand is free to move on to the next problem, like getting a hand off your head.
Why this work matters
Being pinned is uncomfortable, and the instinct is to explode and burn out. Adults who train here learn to stay calm, breathe, make a plan, and act at the right moment. That kind of problem-solving under pressure is useful well beyond the mat.
The class also shows how we look after each other. The pace stays controlled, partners check in with each other, and people at every level can train hard and keep coming back.
