Adult Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Leg Lock Awareness in Live Rounds

Adult Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Leg Lock Awareness in Live Rounds

From Coastal Jiu Jitsu

October 30, 2026

Leg locks come on fast. In this short clip from an adult class at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, the coaching during live rounds focuses on leg lock awareness, hand fighting and getting your partner to the mat.

If you're curious what live training looks like, this is a quick look.

Inside this class

The coach explains why straight ankle locks and heel hooks need respect: you don't feel anything, and then it comes on. During rounds there's coaching on hand fighting, not holding the head too long, protecting your heel in 50/50, taking a sweep when your momentum is already going, not attacking the feet right away, and getting hands or hips to the mat before upgrading your legs.

Video timestamps

00:00 Respecting foot locks and heel hooks
03:01 Hand fighting
07:00 Guard phases: your four options
08:06 Head control leads to the pass
12:17 Protect your heel in 50/50

17:59 Don't attack the feet right away
21:05 Hands or hips to the mat, then upgrade

Key technical concepts

Respect leg locks. They can come on quickly, so tap early and stay aware.

Hand fight first. Controlling your partner's hands sets up everything else.

Position before attack. Get your partner to the mat before looking for finishes.

Why this work matters

Live rounds with coaching along the way show how students apply what they learn and stay safe while they do it. Students learn to make a plan, notice what isn't working, and try another option, and the more experienced partner sets the pace so people at every level can train hard and keep coming back.

This video is also an honest look at a normal day of training here. Nobody is performing for the camera: you see the questions, the corrections, the missed attempts, and the small wins that add up over time. If you've wondered what a class actually feels like before you walk in, this is it. Come try one, ask questions, and see for yourself.

New to Jiu Jitsu?

You don't need any wrestling or Jiu Jitsu background to start. Beginners learn the basics first, drill at a controlled pace, and build up to live training with coaching along the way. Questions are always welcome, and partners look after each other so everyone can keep training.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
