Adult Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Stand-Up, Leg Attacks & a Wrestling Mindset

From Coastal Jiu Jitsu

October 30, 2026

Many people want more wrestling in their game and don't know where to start. In this adult gi class at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, we work stand-up, hand fighting and leg attacks, and bring a wrestling mindset into the guard.

If you want to feel more confident on your feet, this class is a good place to see how we build it.

Inside this class

We start by working through the stand-up from recent classes and chaining attacks instead of hitting one point over and over. We watch arm drag to snap down to hand fighting, and releasing a whizzer to take the back. On leg attacks, the coach shows taking the partner's leg across your body to your hip instead of reaching down and pulling, which sets up an easier takedown and a better position afterward.

There's some wall wrestling, the knee that straightens your back, and the duck under. Then we flip it around: when your partner is about to pass, come up to the top position anyway. Late in class we talk priorities after getting swept, why a collar grip is the first problem to deal with, and pummeling your grips.

Key technical concepts

Chain your attacks. One attack sets up the next instead of repeating the same thing.

Bring a wrestling mindset. Look to come up on top, even from the guard.

Deal with the collar grip first. Clearing your partner's collar grip is often the first problem to solve.

Why this work matters

Building confidence on the feet gives adults a more complete game and helps them feel more comfortable in every part of a match. Students learn to make a plan, notice what isn't working, and try another option, and the more experienced partner sets the pace so people at every level can train hard and keep coming back.

New to Jiu Jitsu?

You don't need any wrestling or Jiu Jitsu background to start. Beginners learn the basics first, drill at a controlled pace, and build up to live training with coaching along the way. Questions are always welcome, and partners look after each other so everyone can keep training.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
