Adult No-Gi Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Not Accepting the Sweep

From Coastal Jiu Jitsu

October 30, 2026

Getting swept is normal. Accepting it isn't required. In this Adult No-Gi class at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, we take the gi concept of not accepting the sweep and work it without grips.

If you want something more interesting than the gym that keeps you fit and thinking, this is what a typical no-gi class looks like.

Inside this class

We continue the same concept without the gi grips. If you stay flat when your partner rolls up, they score. If you get to turtle with one knee up, they haven't. Partners drill a scissor sweep and the counter, using wrestling to come back up and then upgrading the position to take the back.

We talk about fluidity, getting the partner's hip back down before finishing a foot lock, and feeling when a partner pushes into the hip and then releases. The coach makes it clear that a baby sweep doesn't teach the concept. Getting fully swept and refusing to stay there does. The last technique is chest to back with your knees controlling the hips. Rounds close the class.

Key technical concepts

Getting swept isn't the end. If you refuse to stay flat, your partner hasn't scored yet.

Use your wrestling. Coming back up is often the fastest way out of a bad spot.

Upgrade the position. Once you're back up, look for something better, like the back.

Why this work matters

Refusing to accept a bad position is a mindset that serves adults well beyond training. Students learn to make a plan, notice what isn't working, and try another option, and the more experienced partner sets the pace so people at every level can train hard and keep coming back.

New to Jiu Jitsu?

You don't need any wrestling or Jiu Jitsu background to start. Beginners learn the basics first, drill at a controlled pace, and build up to live training with coaching along the way. Questions are always welcome, and partners look after each other so everyone can keep training.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
