Kids Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Ages 6–8 Back to School & the Guard Phases
From Coastal Jiu Jitsu
The first week of school is a big change. In this kids class for ages 6–8 at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, the children talk about preparing the night before school and keep building the phases of the guard.
If your child needs help with focus and routines, this class shows how the mat and home can work together.
Inside this class
An older student helps lead the warm-up, which includes backward ninjas, cartwheels (including one-handed), kangaroo hops and broken eagles. During stretching the children share things they can do the night before school.
The lesson reviews the phases of the guard, starting with phase one: knowing the guards. They work outside De La Riva (wrap the leg, find a bend, hold the wrist), more pressure through the feet when framing, keeping the partner between your legs with Lego hands, and establishing another guard or single leg X when one fails. Class ends with war ball and a reminder about preparing for school.

Key technical concepts
Know your guards. The first phase is knowing what guards you can use.
Keep them in front of you. Lego hands help keep a partner between your legs.
Have another option. When one guard doesn't work, establish another.
Why this work matters
Routines at home and on the mat work together to help children start the school year focused and prepared. Every child is coached at their own level, and partners learn to keep each other safe.
Every kids class at Coastal Jiu Jitsu is built around our Five Rules of Engagement:
1. Avoid the fight at all costs.
2. If punched or kicked, defend yourself.
3. If called names, follow the three T steps: talk, tell, tackle.
4. Never punch or kick the bully—establish control and negotiate.
5. When applying submissions, use minimal force and negotiate.
New to Jiu Jitsu?
Your child doesn't need any experience to start. New children learn the basics first through drills and games, with coaching at every step. Classes are grouped by age, so children train with others at a similar stage, and partners are taught to look after each other.
