Kids Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Ages 6–8 Four Points of Control & Off-Balancing

From Coastal Jiu Jitsu

October 31, 2026

Every great effort starts with trying your best. In this kids class for ages 6–8 at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, the children work on the four points of control, wrapping the leg from guard, and off-balancing a partner without being a bully about it.

If your child is shy or quits when things get hard, this class shows how we reward effort over results.

Inside this class

Warm-ups include snake crawls, crab walks, cheetah runs and cartwheels, with a reminder that what matters is giving your best effort. During stretching the children talk about their responsibility and preparing the night before school.

The lesson covers the four points of control (wrists, knees and ankles), wrapping the inside foot, and shrimping when the wrap doesn't work. The coach points out there's no reason to be a big mean bully: the goal is to put the partner's hands or hips to the mat by off-balancing them, not to shove them over. Partners rotate with help from the coach, and rounds start from standing versus seated.

No reason to be a bully. The goal is control, not being mean.

Why this work matters

Talking about responsibility and preparing the night before school ties what children learn on the mat to their everyday lives. Every child is coached at their own level, and partners learn to keep each other safe.

Every kids class at Coastal Jiu Jitsu is built around our Five Rules of Engagement:
1. Avoid the fight at all costs.
2. If punched or kicked, defend yourself.
3. If called names, follow the three T steps: talk, tell, tackle.
4. Never punch or kick the bully—establish control and negotiate.
5. When applying submissions, use minimal force and negotiate.

New to Jiu Jitsu?

Your child doesn't need any experience to start. New children learn the basics first through drills and games, with coaching at every step. Classes are grouped by age, so children train with others at a similar stage, and partners are taught to look after each other.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
