Kids Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Ages 6–8 X-Guard, Wrestling Up & Learning in Layers
From Coastal Jiu Jitsu
Good jiu jitsu is built in layers, just like a good structure. In this kids class for ages 6–8 at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, the children work from guard into single leg X and X-guard, then wrestle up, sweep or take the back.
If your child struggles to stay focused, this class shows how we keep them on track with clear steps and lots of encouragement.
Inside this class
Warm-ups include snake crawls, crab walks, snail scoots, shrimps, hops, ostrich runs, disciplined double legs and breakfalls. After stretching, the coach uses something one student built as an example: it had layers, and that's how we learn jiu jitsu.
The children practice keeping a partner between their legs, framing with the feet, plucking grips off, and shooting under to single leg X and X-guard. From there they choose wrestling up, sweeping or taking the back. Wrestling up is like climbing a ladder: knees, then hips, then the head. In rounds the coach coaches attacking instead of hanging out on your back, holding the ankles after knocking a partner over, and taking the back when it's there.

Key technical concepts
Learn in layers. Jiu Jitsu is built one step at a time, like building with blocks.
Keep them in front of you. The children keep their partner between their legs.
Attack, don't wait. Instead of hanging out on their back, they look to sweep or come up.
Why this work matters
Clear steps and lots of encouragement help children stay focused and keep improving. Every child is coached at their own level, and partners learn to keep each other safe.
Every kids class at Coastal Jiu Jitsu is built around our Five Rules of Engagement:
1. Avoid the fight at all costs.
2. If punched or kicked, defend yourself.
3. If called names, follow the three T steps: talk, tell, tackle.
4. Never punch or kick the bully—establish control and negotiate.
5. When applying submissions, use minimal force and negotiate.
New to Jiu Jitsu?
Your child doesn't need any experience to start. New children learn the basics first through drills and games, with coaching at every step. Classes are grouped by age, so children train with others at a similar stage, and partners are taught to look after each other.
