Kids Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach | Ages 6–8 Good School Year, Off-Balancing & Wrestling Up
From Coastal Jiu Jitsu
A good school year starts with preparation. In this kids class for ages 6–8 at Coastal Jiu Jitsu in Miramar Beach, the children talk about getting ready for school, then practice four points of control, off-balancing a partner and wrestling up.
If your child struggles to focus, this class shows how we practice sitting, focusing and listening alongside the jiu jitsu.
Inside this class
Warm-ups include ostrich runs, partner drills, snake crawls, kangaroo hops and bunny hops, with regular "sit and focus" resets. During stretching the children discuss how to have a good school year: get prepared, and get a good night's sleep (parents too).
The lesson adds details on establishing a guard and the four points of control: it's okay to keep one grip while attaching to the ankle. Partners practice without competing: grab the ankles, grab the wrist, pluck the grip, and upgrade the feet. When wrestling up, the children look up at the ceiling, and they learn how easy attacking is once a partner is off balance. Class ends with a dodgeball-style game.

Key technical concepts
Prepare to succeed. Good preparation and good sleep help a school year start well.
Off-balance, then attack. Attacking is much easier once a partner is off balance.
Sit and focus. Short resets help children listen and learn.
Why this work matters
Focus, listening and preparation are practiced on the mat alongside the Jiu Jitsu. Every child is coached at their own level, and partners learn to keep each other safe.
Every kids class at Coastal Jiu Jitsu is built around our Five Rules of Engagement:
1. Avoid the fight at all costs.
2. If punched or kicked, defend yourself.
3. If called names, follow the three T steps: talk, tell, tackle.
4. Never punch or kick the bully—establish control and negotiate.
5. When applying submissions, use minimal force and negotiate.
New to Jiu Jitsu?
Your child doesn't need any experience to start. New children learn the basics first through drills and games, with coaching at every step. Classes are grouped by age, so children train with others at a similar stage, and partners are taught to look after each other.
