DARUMA DOJO - HANDLE PLATEAUS

Do plateaus in Jiu Jitsu actually exist?

According to Professor Alberto Juarez, maybe not.

Many students feel like they're not improving, especially after the rapid progress of their first few months on the mats. But Jiu Jitsu is a long-term journey. As your skills develop, improvement becomes less obvious day-to-day and more noticeable over months and years.

The key is consistency.

Keep showing up. Stay disciplined. Trust the process.

Instead of comparing yourself to who you were yesterday, compare yourself to who you were 6 months ago. You may be surprised by how far you've come.

What's one area of your Jiu Jitsu that's improved this year?

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
