As a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belt, should you focus on mastering a few techniques or continue learning as many as possible?

Developing your own BJJ game requires both exploration and specialization, but knowing when to focus on each is an important part of your progression.

At the blue belt level, Professor Alberto encourages students to explore a wide range of positions, techniques and approaches to Jiu-Jitsu.

This is an important stage of development. Exposure to different guards, passing systems, sweeps and submissions helps you discover which positions naturally complement your physical attributes, instincts and understanding of the game.

As you gain experience, certain techniques will begin to stand out. You'll recognize positions where you feel comfortable, understand your opponent's reactions and consistently find opportunities to advance.

Those discoveries become the foundation of your personal Jiu-Jitsu game.

As you progress into the higher belt levels, you can begin narrowing your focus, developing deeper technical understanding and refining the systems that work best for you.

Explore broadly. Recognize what works. Then develop it deeply.

Your Jiu-Jitsu game isn't something you need to decide on as a blue belt. It's something you discover through training.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
